Species Of The Week - Tawny Frogmouth (Podargus strigoides) The Tawny Frogmouth, with their striking eyes and wide mouths, wouldn't look out of place as a character in a classic film like The Neverending Story. These nocturnal birds are often confused with owls, but are actually more closely related to the nightjars. During the day, they perch on tree branches, often low down, camouflaged as part of the tree. The bulk of the Tawny Frogmouth's diet is made up of nocturnal insects, worms, slugs and snails. Most of its food is obtained by pouncing to the ground from a tree or other elevated perch. Learn more about these delightful birds on the AM site. See link in bio.

If you've ever wondered how Museums make replicas of rocks for displays in Museums, you might be interested to learn that one of the techniques is to make a mould of a real rock! In 1983, the Australian Museum Preparations Team went on a special camping expedition to take castings of rocks in order to accurately recreate rocks in a new gallery that was being built at the Museum. The team camped along with The Australian Museum Society. If you look closely, you'll see photographers Kate Lowe and John Fields captured more than a few campside pranks along the way! Images by John Fields and Kate Lowe. Digitised as part of the AM Photographic Archives (PAD) Project 2023.

In 1914, polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton led the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, regarded as the last major expedition of the 'Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration'. The first to attempt to cross Antarctica coast-to-coast, Shackleton failed to achieve his goal, but the events that transpired form one of history’s greatest stories of survival. In this immersive VR experience, produced by award-winning studio Monkeystack, you can follow in Shackleton's footsteps with adventurer Tim Jarvis AM and also witness the effect climate change has had on the Antarctic region over the last 100 years. Thin Ice VR opens this week on Saturday, 6 July, at the Australian Museum. Book your spot now. See link in bio.

The concept of 'Girl Math' trended online recently - but the AM is more excited about 'Green Math' 🌱 Did you know that making the switch to sustainable products can save you money? In just a short time, you'll can recoup the initial cost of setting up, and every use after that is pure savings. Some might say that you're earning money for doing nothing. For this Plastic Free July, let's do some green math and see how sustainable swaps can save you money over the long term.

This stunning photo is part of a portfolio of aerial images captured by Lewis Burnett, documenting the diversity of our country's native species. "With some of the richest waters on our planet, we are beyond privileged to have so many rare and endangered species call our waters home," says Lewis. This is one of the winning photos in The 2023 Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year, a South Australian Museum exhibition, which is on display now at the Australian Museum. This unique exhibition is FREE and open now. The Emperor Penguin is the largest living penguin on Earth and the star of the film Happy Feet. It is found only in Antarctica and can be identified by its large size and bright yellow ear patches. Their wings are flattened into flippers, which allow them to ‘fly underwater’ to hunt fish, krill and squids. These penguins march up to 120 kilometres across the snow to breeding colonies on the sea ice, where a female will lay a single egg. The male incubates the egg (for over two months without any food!) while the female feeds. The two take turns foraging in the sea and caring for their baby chicks. Due to climate change, ice shelves that were once stable have turned into thin ice, where thousands of chicks drown as the ice cracks beneath their feet. This species could be extinct in 75 years without human-induced global warming slowing down. Our grandchildren's children may only learn about this species from cartoons.

👀 If you've been to Billabong Waterhole lately, you'll have spotted our BRAND NEW coffee cup recycling station! To use it, just separate your liquid, lid and cup, and you've done your part to ensure your coffee cups are recycled. It's one of the many ways that the AM is committed to reducing our impact on the environment. #SustainableDestinationPartnership #SDP
