Have you had the opportunity to view National Treasures: Velázquez in Liverpool yet? This must-see exhibition features the masterpiece 'The Rokeby Venus' by renowned artist Diego Velázquez. As the only surviving female nude by the artist and one of his most celebrated works, it is the focal point of our latest display at the Walker Art Gallery. Alongside collections from National Museums Liverpool, including ancient and contemporary works, this iconic 17th-century painting is presented in a unique and unexpected way. Prepare to have your perceptions challenged as this exhibition pushes the boundaries and presents 'The Rokeby Venus' in a new light. We have curated a display that includes works by women and non-binary artists, such as Ethel Walker, René Matic, Zanele Muholi, and Harriet Hosmer, which will offer a fresh perspective on this masterpiece. This loaned work is part of the National Treasures programme, a celebration of the 200th birthday of the @NationalGallery in London. As part of this programme, twelve institutions across the UK have been loaned a different masterpiece from the National Gallery. For the duration of these displays, over 35 million people - more than half of the UK population - will have the opportunity to view a National Gallery masterpiece within just an hour's journey. 10 May 2024—26 Aug 2024 FREE entry [ID: Four photos showing the gallery space, with people looking at a variety of different paintings on display including the Rokeby Venus] Photos by @PeteCarr

The exhibition will open in Liverpool on 19 October 2024 and run until 9 March 2025 and aims to ask poignant questions about the present and to provide a moment of celebration and joy centred around artists working in the UK. "The Youth Engagement Forum has given me a world of opportunities. I have been able to apply my knowledge to in person applications while studying at university. The group is very inviting and helps with confidence and group working activities. From pop up events at Liverpool museums, to poster making. Other opportunities that come from the group include being in the Youth Advisory Panel at the Natural History Museum in London where I worked on an urban nature project. I also had a paid position for English Heritage in which I aided in the discussion /development of an augmented reality experience for decolonising one of their sites. May who runs the group is very supportive, for example if you have interests in certain aspects on how a museum operates she will always try to accommodate in having an experience that facilitates understanding." Juliette Our Youth Engagement Forum could be for you if you are - 🌟Aged between 16-24 years old. 🌟Keen to get involved with local museums and galleries. 🌟Interested in sharing your ideas and planning events. Despite being born into a humble and disadvantaged family, Charles Fairfax-Murray (1849 - 1919) remained determined to carve out a successful path for himself. As a young man, he landed a job in an engineer's office in Westminster, where he cultivated his skills and knowledge. Through a chance encounter with the renowned artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti and his circle, Fairfax-Murray's passion for art was sparked. In 1866, he became the first studio assistant for Edward Burne-Jones, a renowned painter. With unwavering dedication and a keen eye for detail, Fairfax-Murray quickly learned to emulate the techniques of his mentors. His talents were recognized, and he was given various exciting opportunities, such as transferring Burne-Jones's cartoons onto glass and working for artists like Rossetti and G.F.Watts. Fairfax-Murray's creativity knew no bounds, as he also designed illustrations for Christina Rossetti's 'Goblin Market and other Poems' in 1862 and William Morris's 'The Earthly Paradise' in 1868-70. He even had the privilege of preparing stained-glass designs and painting windows for Morris. Driven by a thirst for knowledge, Fairfax-Murray journeyed to Italy to make copies of Old Master works for the great John Ruskin. These works are now proudly displayed at the Ruskin Gallery in Sheffield. [ID: A portrait drawing on paper. Let's talk about 'The Promise' - a true masterpiece that will transport you to the beautiful orchards of Penmere near Falmouth. Can you imagine the inspiration Henry Scott Tuke must have found in such stunning surroundings? But what makes this painting even more intriguing is its unconventional composition, cutting the figures off at their waist. Yet, through this unique choice, we catch glimpses of Impressionist influence that add to the overall charm of the piece. What sets 'The Promise' apart from Tuke's usual creations is its sentimental theme - a tribute to young love. As a founding member of the New English Art Club, Tuke typically shied away from such populist subjects, making this painting a rare gem in his repertoire. But let's delve into Tuke's artistic journey, shall we? From his time at the renowned Slade School of Art in London to his travels in Italy and Paris where he fell in love with Impressionist works, his journey ultimately led him to the picturesque fishing villages of Newlyn, Cornwall. Here, his focus shifted to capturing the true essence of these coastal communities. And from 1885 onwards, his attention zeroed in on the local fishermen themselves, often depicted partially clothed or even nude. But hold on - there's more to the story! Recently, Professor Jongwoo Jeremy Kim has presented a fascinating new perspective on Tuke's works. He invites us to view them through a different lens, in light of the artist's association with the Uranian poets. This group of male writers, united by their sexuality and appreciation for the beauty of the adolescent male form, openly wrote about their desires and drew inspiration from Ancient Greek pederasty. In 'The Promise', Tuke's male model, Jack Rollings, takes center stage, embodying both youth and ambiguity. The tender embrace captured in the painting suggests a deeper connection between artist and muse, leaving us to ponder the promises exchanged within. Born amidst the bustling city of Liverpool, Daniel Alexander Williamson (1823 - 1903) was a prodigy from a family of esteemed artists. His passion for painting in oils was ignited at an early age, and he soon became a fervent follower of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, unbound by its conventions. With painstaking attention to detail, Williamson's early works were masterpieces of realism, capturing the raw beauty of the natural world in all its glory. But as he progressed in his artistic journey, he discovered the magic of watercolours, a medium that enabled him to play with the gentle nuances of light and create an otherworldly ambiance. Today, his masterpiece "Flowers - Spray of Apple Blossom" stands as a testament to his unwavering pursuit of artistic excellence. [ID: A watercolour of a branch of apple blossoms that fill the paper.
