Check out this new resource, "Engaging Men from Multicultural and Faith-Based Communities in Primary Prevention": ⬆️ link in story ⬆️ To make gender equality and violence prevention activities effective, it's crucial to involve everyone, including men and boys from multicultural and faith-based communities. By overcoming engagement barriers, showcasing the benefits of prevention activities, and working with communities to build trust and capacity, we can help these men participate meaningfully in primary prevention. Developed by the @mcwh1978 and @safe_and_equal , this resource combines insights from the Connecting Communities network and existing evidence on engaging men from these communities in prevention initiatives.

Financial abuse is a hidden epidemic affecting millions. Tory Archbold's harrowing experience of stalking and financial control highlights how difficult it can be to escape abusive relationships, especially when financial systems don't support victim-survivors. Many businesses inadvertently enable financial abuse, but there’s hope. Over 20 companies, including ANZ and Optus, have pledged to address financial abuse in their terms and conditions, aiming to prevent harm and hold perpetrators accountable. Discover how these changes are empowering victims and what more needs to be done. Read the full @abcnews_au story ⬆️ link in story ⬆️ A key area of the service and assistance WLSQ provides is financial rebuilding through our Financial Abuse Prevention Unit (FAPU). FAPU assists women when they have made the decision to leave/or have left an abusive partner to help with reviewing their financial options, budgeting and practical strategies to build financial security for themselves and their children. Women from refugee and migrant backgrounds are among the most vulnerable in our society, with about one-third experiencing partner violence. Due to their reluctance to disclose, many remain in abusive relationships. Their vulnerability is further heightened by family separation, pre-arrival trauma, and limited support networks during resettlement. So how do we better help this vulnerable cohort? Research from the University of Wollongong, the first of its kind in Australia, shows universal screening at settlement services helped women speak up and get help. “More than 160,000 parents in Australia's child support system failed to lodge tax returns last financial year and avoided paying or receiving the correct amount in child maintenance payments from their ex-partner.” WLSA EO, Lara Freidin spoke to Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) about the devastating impact non-payment of child support has on women who make up the majority of recipients and are already facing significant economic disadvantage. This is a widespread and gendered issue, leaving many women escaping violence to live in poverty. Read more from the @abcnews_au ⬆️ link in story ⬆️

Exciting news! Last week, we launched the Women’s Legal Service Qld (WLSQ) Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), which begins a long-term journey to support and enhance legal and social justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The launch event at the @statelibraryqld featured a beautiful bespoke artwork by @sar.ra , a talented First Nations artist from Goreng Goreng Country. The event included a Welcome to Country by Aunty Kathryn Fisher, speeches from Rachael Sarra and Karina Hogan, a presentation of our RAP, and a moving dance performance by @the.firstcreatives . WLSQ is now looking for members to join our First Nations Advisory Group, as we recognise the importance of incorporating First Nations wisdom and knowledge into our work. Please express your interest via our bio link if you want to contribute your expertise and help guide WLSQ. Join us on this important journey towards reconciliation and justice. Together, we can build safer futures for all women and children in Queensland. Read the full Reflect RAP via our bio link.
