Favorite show on view now 🪩 Jean-Pierre Villafañe’s solo show “Playtime” at Charles Moffett is full of lively, humorous, and lascivious figures performing their corporate duties as their true selves and inner desires peek through. Villafañe draws on his keen eye for fashion and architecture, revealing some of the ways we mask our many personas. The show is on view through August 2. Took the ferry to Governors Island to see Jenny Kendler’s exhibition “Other of Pearl,” a multidisciplinary show that considers the role of extraction in climate change. Focusing on oysters and whales, Kendler invites viewers to seek kinship between the human and nonhuman. At the same time, she highlights the history of Governors Island and New York Harbor, in particular the changes of power and the impact of consumption, commerce, and extraction on maritime health. Read more about the show and some of the important work Kendler and others are doing (such as Billion Oyster Project, an initiative the artist is supporting through the sale of her oyster sculptures) in my latest for The Art Newspaper 🦪🐳 and swipe for some pictures I took during install. #governorsisland #jennykendler #theartnewspaper #billionoysterproject #newyorkharbor #maritimehealth #oceanhealth @billionoyster @nycferry

Wrote about Jordan Weber’s powerful new public installation in Detroit for The Art Newspaper. The regenerative piece, Detroit Remediation Forest, tracks the air quality of the East Canfield neighborhood, alerting locals to the levels with sensors on the sculpture and via an app. The installation also cleans the polluted air with specifically chosen plants and trees and will include a raised walkway to bring visitors into the tree canopy. The project is one of many supported by the nonprofit Sidewalk Detroit and is done in collaboration with the East Canfield nonprofit Canfield Consortium. Had the opportunity to write for the Brooklyn Rail’s ArTonic section, a unique, long-form section that takes a deep dive (very deep, 4,000 words) into the history of arts nonprofits. I was tasked with writing about the storied International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP), the Brooklyn-based residency that has supported over 2,000 artists and curators since its founding 30 years ago. The more I learned about ISCP, the more I saw the name everywhere. They’ve been quietly uplifting artists and curators, giving them the space and resources to grow. ISCP alums have been involved with countless exhibitions and projects—at least 12 are in the current Venice Biennale and 4 are in the Whitney Biennial. Interviewed photographer Joshua Charow for Cultured’s latest issue, the Cult 100 🪩 A few years ago, Charow began photographing some of the last remaining artist lofts in the city, which are protected by the 1982 Loft Law. He found a map of buildings where these spaces might be located and buzzed hundreds of apartments, slowly meeting the artists who live and work there. Each space is like a time capsule of the artists’ lives, built up over years in these rare spaces. Some have been living in their lofts for decades. The images and interviews tell a story of a long-gone New York art scene. Read more over in Cultured and online. #culturedmagazine #culturedmag #artistlofts #loftlaw
