You can watch the recording of my song cycle “Language of Loss” on YouTube now. You’ll be showered with the deep and powerful poetry of @sholeh_wolpe , and the intensity and subtlety that @charl_ttemundy and @nathaniellanasa have injected into the dots and lines I put on paper will mesmerize you from the beginning to the end. I’m grateful to all of these incredible artists for their gift, and of course to @brooklynartsongsociety for making this collaboration possible. Here are two excerpts from the cycle. It’s been five years since I sat with Anssi Karttunen in his Paris apartment, and he asked if I wanted to write a work for cello and orchestra for him. I remember how unreal it felt to receive this proposition from a legend whom I had known from years ago for his recordings of Kaija Saariaho, Betsy Jolas, and Magnus Lindberg, and the YouTube video of his workshop with Kaija Saariaho at Weill Music Institute. Later on, Christian Baldini, director of UC Davis Symphony Orchestra generously accepted to program the world premiere of the work. However, it took five years, a pandemic, a couple of moves, and major life events to finally materialize this collaboration. I’d be naive to think that these events did not play a role in shaping “Meditations on Departure.” I made several attempts at developing ideas, sketching, and even composing, and all but the last one failed and were thrown out. Doubting, questioning, failing, and starting over exist in the fabric of this piece. To say Anssi Karttunen and Christian Baldini have been patient, gracious, and compassionate with me in this process is an understatement. “Meditations on Departure” is unapologetically quiet and fragile but also direct, and raw. Anssi has given it so much beauty and nuance with his mastery, and Christian has complemented it with such passion, care and artistry. I’m grateful to and for both of them. The UCDSO musicians have been troopers, and the production staff is amazing as always. The world premiere is at Mondavi Center in less than two hours. Some of the kindest and most supportive humans I’ve ever known, who taught and advocated for me as their former student, and who will always be my dear friends, are going to be present. So, the night couldn’t be more special. Davis has always been so good to me. My heart is full. The concert will be streamed on YouTube. Find the link in my bio. It will remain active if you want to watch later.

Take this snapshot from our first rehearsal of “Meditations on Departure” at Jackson Hall, Mondavi Center, and grab your tickets for the show this Saturday at 7:30pm. At moments like this I realize why I’m doing what I’m doing and why I want to keep doing it for as long as I can. Don’t get me wrong though! It’s not about the spectacle, but rather the shared experience and the people who sculpt time, bring dots and lines to life, and move you with their gift. Here are a few stills by Catherine Hancock from the memorable evening I shared with old and new friends. @sholeh_wolpe , I’m eternally grateful to you for allowing me to set music to your powerful and poignant words. Thank you so much again, @charl_ttemundy and @nathaniellanasa for your captivating interpretation of “Language of Loss!” My deepest gratitude to @brooklynartsongsociety for this beautiful journey! And a big thank you to all my dear friends for joining me for the show. 🤍🤍🤍 Images courtesy of @catherinehancockphotography

Composer Aida Shirazi discusses her BASS-Commissioned new song cycle, Language of Loss, which receives its Wolrd Premiere on Thursday, May 2, at 7:30PM as part of our New Voices Festival. Set to poetry by Sholeh Wolpe, the work explores different kinds of loss that we may experience. Using extended techniques and expressions, Aida’s music evokes the profound quality of Sholeh’s storytelling — Aida also references an Art Song from the Romantic repertoire. To find out which one, we hope you come to next week’s concert! #BrooklynArtSongSociety #ArtSong #ContemporaryClassicalMusic #ClassicalMusic #Composer #Brooklyn

An excerpt from Language of Loss by Aida Shirazi, text by Sholeh Wolpe. We are so excited for the world premiere of this work on Thursday, May 2 at New Voices Festival: Departures II. Aida’s score is sparse, haunting, and experimental to match Sholeh’s examination of exile and loss. Soprano Charlotte Mundy and pianist Nathaniel LaNasa are supremely gifted interpreters of the music of our time- you don’t want to miss their premiere performance of this work. Also, come early for a pre-concert talk between Aida and artistic Director Mike a Brofman. For tickets and details check out the link in today’s story. #brooklynartsongsociety #newmusic #score #composer #soprano #piano #poet #worldpremiere @charl_ttemundy @nathaniellanasa @mlb763

Late announcement: Taking a break from an intense month to let you all know that last Sunday, April 14th, @jin.xiang_yu and @frystreetquartet premiered “They Need to Remember” for voice and string quartet at Libby Gardner Hall, SLC. The piece was commissioned by @glfcam and Fry Street Quartet as part of GLFCAM’s “Composing Earth” initiative, focusing on climate change as a civilizational emergency, and our role as artists and storytellers to raise awareness and create change through creative work alongside scientific data provided by experts. I had the pleasure of collaborating with amazing playwright @wrenbrian on this very special project. Wren wrote an incredibly powerful text which became the narrative and musical backbone of the piece. I’m grateful to @gabrielalenafrank , Fry Street Quartet, Jx, and Wren for embarking on this journey of awareness, action, and empathy through artistic expression with me. The road is long, and there’s so much needed to be done on personal and collective levels, but as our “Composing Earth” mentor Dr. Rob Davies would remind us during our study year, everyone should do their part however big or small, and as long as we do our part, there is hope.
