Introducing 2023 AIM fellow Misra Walker @mizziverse . Read more below to learn about Misra. Misra Walker (1992) Bronx, NY, is a community organizer, educator, and interdisciplinary artist working in sculpture, installation, and video. In 1971 Marvin Gaye implored the world: “What’s going on? OoOoO, What’s going on?” Walker carries this question with her, asking after Gaye, what IS going on? How can we understand our present material conditions if we don’t have the tools to analyze our past? Her work seeks to bring the inseparability of the present from the past to glimpse a possible future of liberation from capitalism, patriarchy, and white supremacy. Walker received her BFA from Cooper Union in 2015 and her MFA from Rutgers Mason Gross School of the Arts in 2022. Artwork(s) label: 1.“You can’t sit with us,” 2019. Introducing 2023 AIM fellow Daniel Shieh @danielshieh . Read more below to learn about Daniel. Daniel Shieh (b. Taiwan) creates immersive installations that manipulate perspective, sense of distance, and visibility to alter the viewer’s perception of each other. His work has been exhibited by LMCC Arts Center, Socrates Sculpture Park, SPRING/BREAK Art Show, Wassaic Project, Franconia Sculpture Park, Josephine Sculpture Park, and I-Park Foundation. He has participated in residencies at Cité Internationale des Arts, MASS MoCA, ACRE, Anderson Ranch, Millay Arts, and Fountainhead. He received an MDes in Art, Design, and the Public Domain from Harvard University and is based in Brooklyn, New York. Introducing 2023 AIM fellow María Elena Pombo @fragmentario_ . Read more below to learn about María Elena. María-Elena Pombo is a Venezuelan interdisciplinary artist with a research-based practice. She works through open-ended and interconnected projects that seek to dismantle hegemonic narratives and create alternative ones through installations, sculptures, videos, and actions that play with site-specificity, ephemerality, and participation. She is AIM Fellow at The Bronx Museum and member of NEW INC, The New Museum’s cultural incubator. Pombo won the 2021 London Design Biennale’s Theme Medal and has received grants from New York Foundation for the Arts, Queens Council on the Arts, and more. Her work has been exhibited at Somerset House (London), Mana Contemporary (Jersey City), a/d/o (Brooklyn), Yamamoto-Seika (Osaka), Fabbrica del Vapore (Milan), and more across the USA, Europe, and Asia. Pombo’s work has been featured in The New York Times, Metal Magazine, i-D, Vogue, Forbes, and more. She is faculty at Parsons School of Design and has lectured in traditional and unorthodox spaces internationally. She recently won the Róng Design Library Award at SaloneSatellite in Milan. This summer she will be artist in residency at Associazione Borgo degli Artisti in Bienno and lecturer for the Public Programme of Foodscapes, the Spanish Pavillion at the 18th Venice Architecture Biennale. Introducing 2023 AIM fellow Syd Abady @syd_abady . Read more below to learn about Syd. Syd Abady explores the politics and personalities of home spaces through a textiles-based practice. Her work incorporates architectural imagery, found objects, and fiber techniques to consider what makes a home and for whom. Abady received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Textiles and Nature, Culture, Sustainability Studies with an emphasis on Urban Studies. She has exhibited throughout the US, including at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA LA), and Miami Art Week. In 2024, she will be based in Santiago, Chile where she will make a new body of work thanks to the support of a Fulbright Scholarship. Artwork(s) label: 1. Introducing 2023 AIM fellow Huidi Xiang @huidixiang . Read more below to learn about Huidi. Huidi Xiang (b. Chengdu, China) is a sculptor based in Brooklyn, NY, USA. She holds an MFA in Art from Carnegie Mellon University (2021) and a BA in Architecture and Studio Art from Rice University (2018). In her practice, Huidi makes sculptural objects, installations, and systems to investigate how and why pop cultural products and phenomena associated with late capitalism work. Huidi’s works have been exhibited internationally, including OCAT Biennale (Shenzhen, China), KAJE (Brooklyn, NY, USA), Lydian Stater (Long Island City, NY, USA), Tutu Gallery (Brooklyn, NY, USA), LATITUDE Gallery (New York, NY, USA), and Contemporary Calgary (Calgary, Canada). Huidi has also completed many artist residencies and fellowships, including NARS Foundation International Residency Program, ACRE Residency Program, and the Millay Colony for the Arts. Introducing 2023 AIM fellow Coral Saucedo Lomelí @arrecifereef . Read more below to learn about Coral. Coral Saucedo Lomelí is a visual artist born in Mexico City and based in Brooklyn NY. Through her work, she recontextualizes overlooked objects and processes into poetic moments. Her work explores material relationships, labor, and collapsing systems, drawing inspiration from domestic objects, the urban landscape, poetry, and craft. Saucedo Lomelí completed her undergraduate studies at ArtCenter College of Design and an MFA at Yale University. Recent residencies include Yaddo (New York), RUINA (Oaxaca, MX), The Lighthouse Works (New York), SOMA (Mexico City), NARS Foundation (New York). Introducing 2023 AIM fellow Jonathan Sanchez Noa @jonathan_sanchez_noa . Read more below to learn about Jonathan. Jonathan Sánchez Noa was born in Havana, Cuba and now lives in Brooklyn. He creates artworks that examine how histories of colonial extractivism have impacted notions of race, identity and climate. He utilizes Cuban tobacco as a medium to reconstruct narratives of displacement in relation to cultural and religious significance. In a current series of papermaking works, he conveys ways of understanding a particular Creole experience that is rooted in ideas of resilience. Jonathan earned his BFA from The Cooper Union in 2020, and attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2023. Recent exhibitions of his work include Vernacular À la Mode at Prizm, Miami, FL (2022); Rastros en el tiempo at The Clemente Center, New York, NY (2022); and Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling at Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art, Copenhagen, Denmark (2021). Introducing 2023 AIM fellow Ami Park @iam__ami_ Read more below to learn about Ami. Ami Park, born in Seoul, Korea, is a visual artist based in Queens, NY. Her textiles explore vibrations between human minds, emotions, and things into a theme of self-awareness, identity, and perception with her deep scientific and spiritual curiosity. Park has exhibited at Ethan Cohen Kube, Chashama, New York Live Arts, New York Foundation for the Arts, SVA Flatiron Gallery NY; The Holy Art Gallery in London; Gallerie Dièse in Paris; and CICA Museum in Korea, among others. Her wearable art collection, Mold, contributed to a multidisciplinary project Beauteous for MoMA Poprally, at Andrew Freedman Home. Park has been awarded fellowships and grants by The Bronx Museum, New York Foundation for the Arts, Cerf Plus, and The Puffin Foundation. She holds a BFA in Fashion Design from Parsons School of Design. She completed her residency at Uncool Artist and Interdisciplinary Practices in Bio Art at the School of Visual Arts.
