While you celebrate tonight, remember that fireworks can be scary for many animals and this time of year can be very busy for shelters because of all the pets that get loose.
Take these steps to ensure your pets stay safe:
- Keep pets indoors with doors and windows closed during the celebrations if possible.
- If you must take them outside, make sure they are kept on leash and are wearing their ID tags!
- Make sure your pet’s microchip information is up to date as a precaution.
- Play some soothing music or ambient sounds to help calm pets who are anxious about fireworks.
⭐️ We are closed for walk-ins this weekend and will resume normal hours on Tuesday, July 9th!
RESCUED FROM A HIGHWAY! 😱
Ralphie is one lucky dog. This little guy was spotted on the side of the Cross Island Parkway over the weekend. Who knows how many cars passed by before his amazing rescuers stopped and came to his aid. Although we are bursting at the seams with dogs, we simply could not turn this sweet senior boy away knowing what he had been through.
Ralphie is incredibly friendly and easy-going. Given his temperament, we believe he was likely a family dog before he was dumped. 💔 Thankfully, he doesn’t seem bothered by his situation and we know he’ll find a new home just as amazing as he is. We believe him to be around 10 years old and likely hypoallergenic.
Ralphie’s stray hold is up and no one has come forward for him so he is up for adoption at Animal Haven.
Please note: We don’t have walk-in hours until Tuesday, July 9th due to the holiday weekend, so please fill out an inquiry on his profile on our website if you’re interested in making an appointment to meet him!

Meet adoptable Ophelia, Milagros, and Lux at #AnimalHaven !
😸 Ophelia (black) is our social butterfly (she actually crawled in our lap while trying to take photos 🥰). Ophelia is an absolute darling and loves attention. While she’s currently housed with other cats, she doesn’t always seem to care for them, and we think she would be happiest in a one-cat home.
😽 Milagros (torbie) is a gorgeous 1-year-old cat. We’re still getting to know her, but so far she seems like she would do well in most homes—she’s playful and friendly.
😼 Lux (tabby) is our introvert—she’s curious but prefers to take things slow with new people. This sweet 2-year-old gal would benefit from a quieter home where she can settle in and come out of her shell as she gains trust.
We have SO many cats (and kittens) for adoption. Meet them during our walk-in hours (Tuesday—Friday from 1pm to 7pm or Sunday from 12pm to 4pm ), or Saturdays by appointment! 💜

Adoptable PUPPIES!! 🐶💜
Meet the “Y” litter! These precious pups have us asking so many questions like... WHY are they so darn cute?! We are absolutely smitten with these girls and we know you will be too once you meet them. Sweet and gentle, we know these 2-month-old terrier mixes would do great in almost any home. They were rescued from an overcrowded shelter from the south where their future was uncertain. We're so thankful to be able to give them a chance at a home and family. 🥹
When it comes to puppies, remember that you’re starting from scratch! From basics to potty training to socialization - they are looking to you to point them in the right direction so they can be the best pups they can be. They’re blank slates ready to learn but they need guidance to be set up for success!
We have no information about their parents so we can only estimate that they will be around medium-sized.

Today was definitely pool party weather! ⛱️ It’s been over 90°F here in NYC! 🥵We took out the puppy pool to give our dogs a break from the heat on their walks.
Elmer had a short walk this afternoon but a nice long doggie paddle! If you remember Elmer, he arrived at Animal Haven basically skin and bones. Well this sweet lowrider has finally filled out and is hoping to charm his way into a home!
Elmer is a 2-years-old bulldog mix! He gets along with other dogs in more neutral settings but gets a little jealous sharing the attention in his space. He is not the brightest when it comes to reading social cues so we think he’d probably be best as the only dog in the home. But this smushy guy does play well with other dogs and does great on leash too!

Remember Summer’s puppies? We have a Coozie update for you! 🍹😎
Coozie, now named Bentley, was one of mama Summer’s ten puppies. Summer lovingly cared for her pups while at Animal Haven, until, almost a year ago, they found their new homes. (Summer did, too!) 🥰 Bentley’s family reached out recently with updates on this handsome guy.
“Bentley has settled in amazingly. He enjoys watching 101 Dalmatians while munching on cantaloupe. He loves giving high-fives and hugs to the neighbors. He is a little bigger than expected (he weighed about 70 pounds just before his birthday) but is still the sweetest baby.” 🥹

❤️🩹PUPPY NEEDED AMPUTATION❤️🩹
We received a plea to help 9-month-old Sushi who was brought to @nycacc with multiple fractures in her right hind leg. Animal Haven had her transferred immediately to our veterinary partner for emergency surgery. We weren’t given any information on how this terrible injury happened, but we knew we needed to help this little pup. Due to the nature and severity of the fractures, amputation of the leg was the best course of action for her to live a pain-free life.
Thankfully, her surgery was successful and she was discharged. She has been resting and recovering comfortably at Animal Haven under the watchful eye of our dedicated team. Amputation is a serious surgical procedure and Sushi is on strict crate rest, receiving multiple medications, and is having her suture site cleaned and her bandage changed twice a day by our skilled staff.
Sushi has a recheck next week and should hopefully have the sutures removed if all looks good! Sushi is up for adoption at Animal Haven with the understanding that she has a long road of recovery ahead of her.
We are able to take on difficult and costly cases like Sushi because of our Recovery Road Fund and through the generous support of our community.
