Kayla Childs, also known as “Black Buttafly”, is a 27-year-old native of New Jersey who hails from New Brunswick, New Jersey. Her roots are in Gospel, Jazz, and Soul music, and her influences include Patrice Rushen, Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, and J Dilla. She is a singer-songwriter, artist, and producer living and playing in Philadelphia, PA. She has traveled across the U.S. and Europe touring professionally. She has played, studied, and recorded with artists & producers such as Ms. Lauryn Hill, Pete Rock, Lenny White, KeiyaA, RES, Steve Mckie, Khemist, Ivy Sole, Orion Sun, Son Little, Duendita, Hannibal Burress & Grammy Award Winning Artist, Jermaine Holmes.
Kayla has had the opportunity to perform and share her music under the Moniker “Black Buttafly” opening for Braxton Cook (Milkboy), Meshelle Ndegeocello (Ardmore Music Hall), Cisco Swank (World Cafe Live), Kiefer (World Cafe Live), and Kamasi Washington (Union Transfer). She is also a member of Tri-State area musical collectives Omar’s Hat and UPENDO and has formed a new collective of genius musicians known as “The Nu School Collective.” Kayla is currently working on her debut EP leading up to an anticipated release for Summer 2024. She is an inspiring artist looking to unapologetically impact the world through her soulful sounds and vulnerable vibes with the help of community, strong beliefs, and teachings.
