NYC GET READY!! This fall, The Bronx Museum presents ‘FUTURA 2000: BREAKING OUT,’ the largest exhibition of legendary artist @futuradosmil ’s work ever presented in his hometown 🔥 Opening on Sunday, September 8, 2024, ‘BREAKING OUT,’ features sculptures, drawings, prints, studies, collaborations, and archival paraphernalia dating from the 1970s to the present, as well as new site-specific temporary installations. The exhibition’s title, ‘BREAKING OUT,’ refers to FUTURA 2000’s boundary-breaking creative practice and his famous 1980 piece, ‘Break,’ where the artist painted the full exterior of an NYC subway car with vibrant color and no lettering—a first for the graffiti art movement. At the time, FUTURA 2000 would “bench” in The South Bronx, a short distance from The Bronx Museum. Admission to The Bronx Museum and all its exhibitions is always FREE for everyone! The exhibition is accompanied by free programs and activities, stay tuned for more details @bronxmuseum . ‘FUTURA 2000: BREAKING OUT’ was organized by the University at Buffalo Art Galleries (@ubartgalleries ). The recent announcement that $53 million of funding has been restored for arts & culture in New York City’s 2025 budget made The Bronx Museum’s bowling staff outing yesterday feel even more celebratory 🎳🥳 Thank you @MayorAdams , @CommishCumbo , @bronxbpgibson , @NYCSpeakerAdams , @JustinBrannan , #CarlinaRivera , @althea4theBX , and the entire Council for prioritizing this public investment as well as to all those who advocated for this action 🙏 The staff at @bronxmuseum works so hard to make the Museum a welcoming arts space for ALL people through free admission and community-engaged programs. This budget restoration is a huge win for us, our audiences, and all other NYC arts & culture organizations - large and small - that receive funding from the city 🏆 Speaking of winning... Bronx Museum Director Klaudio Rodriguez earned the highest score bowling amongst the staff. So next time there’s a budget dispute, we know how to settle it 😎😉 #BronxMuseum #CultureForAll

🚨 If you are seeing this post, please join @bronxmuseum and other NYC non-profit arts & culture organizations in our fight to restore $53 million of public funding to the city’s budget that this Mayoral administration is seeking to cut entirely 😱 When funding is taken away, it directly impacts people who rely on @bronxmuseum for access to free arts enrichment programs 😢😤 The clock is ticking: June 30th is the City’s budget deadline—so click the link in our bio now to sign a letter in support of funding for NYC arts & culture!! We thank @nyccouncil , @nycspeakeradams , CM #CarlinaRivera , CM @justin.brannan , CM @althea_stevens_d16 , and Council Leaders for fighting to restore and baseline $53 Million for culture in the city’s Fiscal Year 2025 Budget 🙏💗 Pictured: 1. Please join us at The Bronx Museum of Arts @bronxmuseum Sixth Biennial curated by @eileenj8 on Saturday, June 15th 1 pm -2:30 pm for Self-Talk, my latest interactive puppet project (and stay on for four other artist-led events!). Link in bio. The Self-Talk booths will be open for play! The public will be invited to enter in pairs for five minute increments to puppeteer two fabric figures, Sorrow and Joy. Using pulleys, levers and a radio you will express your puppet self to your partner in exploration, your other puppet self :) Self-Talk is a nonverbal conversation between Sorrow and Joy. It is about the inseparable relationship between the two emotions. It is a space for them to coexist and co-create playfully. This project is dedicated to my dear friend, author, wife, mother and daughter Sarah Mandel @sarahmandelauthor who was able to hold emotions, hers and those of others, with immense grace, presence, humor and tenderness. Please note: This activity is for ages 18 and up. Special thanks to Roz and Jerry Meyer @roslynmm1 and @bronxmuseum for supporting this grand experiment and to all the people who have left a mark on this unique experience @mamadreza_alimorad , Summer Johnke @jonlevywarren @ksena_samborska and my ever patient house mates @greatflounder Ksena and Christine who let me drill at all hours of the day 😘

🅣🅔🅔🅝 🅒🅞🅤🅝🅒🅘🅛 🅣🅐🅚🅔🅞🅥🅔🅡! Today, participants in the Spring 2024 session of @bronxmuseum ’s Teen Council - a paid internship program for NYC high school students that focuses on art-making and the museum space - are collectively taking over the Museum’s Instagram 😎: “Take our hand and come explore what inspires teens by visiting our exhibition at The Bronx Museum—‘NYC, What Moves You?’—and by coming to Teen Night this Friday, June 14th from 5-7pm (learn more via the link in bio)!” “‘NYC, What Moves You?’ showcases the inspiring community New York City teens have created through art inspired by local surroundings, daily lives, family connections, and much more.” “As members of The Bronx Museum Teen Council, we found it very exciting to see teens of different backgrounds from all over New York City share their sources of inspiration as part of our exhibition. Throughout the process of creating this exhibition, we were not only able to witness the creativity of teens from each borough but also see their different stages in making art: from experimenting to finding their own artistic outlet to solidifying what messages their art communicates.” “So grab your friends and come to Teen Night! Not only will you get inspired by the artwork of fellow NYC teens but you’ll also get to sing your heart away with karaoke, learn how to make buttons and zines, and create your own DIY tote bag. Once you get tired of singing and creating art we’ll have refreshments to help continue the fun. It’ll be a blast for you and your friends!” Pictured: Slide 1 – Lo Boller, Claw, 2024 Slide 2 – ‘NYC, What Moves You?’ installation view Slide 3 – Teen Council members in action Slide 4 – Visitor viewing ‘NYC, What Moves You?’ Slide 5 – ‘NYC, What Moves You?’ exhibition opening Slide 6 – Zines printed on The Bronx Museum’s risograph by Teen Council Slides 7 + 8 – ‘NYC, What Moves You?’ exhibition View Slide 9 – The Bronx Museum’s Teen Council with teen artists 📷 Installation images by Teen Council #BronxMuseum #teencouncil

This Saturday 6/15, as part of the closing celebration for Bronx Calling: The Sixth AIM Biennial at the @bronxmuseum , I will be leading a bilingual, participatory clay workshop for all ages. We will be making pinch pots and also working collectively on a larger, collaborative vessel. Come share some time around clay, fostering connection through this communal practice, in this Museum that has become home for so many of us 🫶🏼 The show, curated by @eileenj8 , closes on Sunday 6/16, so this is your almost last chance to catch it! Saturday will be a wonderful celebration of everyone’s work, and these two months shared together in community. Several public programs include a not-to-be-missed talk hosted by the amazing @fragmentario_ about her work ‘Venezuelan Petroleum for the South Bronx’ The workshop will be bilingual Español/English Thank you @fragmentario_ for the images 🫶🏼

Nueva York ✨ Next Saturday 06/15 as part of @bronxmuseum ’s 6th AIM Biennial curated by @eileenj8 , I’ll be hosting a talk with my inimitable (an understatement) uncle Régulo. We’ll have a conversation about petroleum and Cabimas. Very serious topics but it’ll be fun. We laugh to not cry remember (Welcome to #LaRentrada always). Régulo has been my petroleum provider and collaborator for all the pieces from #TheyCalledItMena , such as ‘Venezuelan Petroleum for the South Bronx’ and ‘Telurismos a Tres Tiempos’ (on view at @sorondo_artists in Barcelona until June 16). He is also a big inspiration on figuring things out, always with humor. Whenever I’ve done weird things in my studio, my parents always say “imagine Régulo was with you”. He is one of the most charismatic, smart and funny people I know. This year has been full of unexpected turns and Régulo being in NYC is one of them. He never left Venezuela until some months ago. Come with all your petroleum questions. I’ll collect some this week. The talk will be in Spanish because Régulo doesn’t speak English but my twin @pomboluiscarlos will translate as we go. There will be a zine to give to those who come with never seen before photos in Cabimas playing with petroleum. Limited availability so come early. Link in stories and bio to RSVP. TYSM Education and Public Engagement Team (Patrick, Nell and Alex) with support in putting this together and being open to this unorthodox format. The show closes Sunday 06/16, so this is almost the last chance to visit. On Saturday there will be other public engagement programming, including a clay workshop with the talented and smart @ivanabrennner ✨ I’m still en las Europas but I’ll be back in NYC soon. See you there 🧚🏻‍♀️ (the image has a mistake, the talk is on Saturday 6/15)

The Bronx Museum is where it’s at 🥳 We love engaging people of The Bronx and beyond in the joy of art and creativity. Our commitment to access means that admission to all our exhibitions, events, and activities is always FREE for everyone 🙌 This is made possible through the generous support of our community - all donations, big or small, are so appreciated and help us to continue our programming (especially in the face of potentially devastating budget cuts to NYC’s arts & culture sector by @nycmayor )…The Bronx Museum’s fiscal year ends at the end of June, so your contribution this month will help us end the year on a high note and begin the new one on strong footing 💪 The link to donate is in our bio, thank you so much for making a difference with your support!! 🎥 @meerkatmedia #BronxMuseum
