On March 10, 1972, Brown University made a bold decision to support the creation of a four-year program in medicine. In a statement after the vote, the Corporation wrote: “It is this integration of medical education with the social sciences, humanities and other sciences which seems to us the most important feature of the new program and the one which promises to give it a special niche in medical education on the national scene.” Built on that cornerstone, the Warren Alpert Medical School has become an innovator in medical education and research over the past five decades. Brown celebrates the 50 year legacy and impact of the Medical School while looking ahead to the discoveries and innovations to come. Discover the history of Rhode Island’s first and only medical school and learn more about the distinctive and innovative elements of Brown’s approach to medical training and biomedical innovation at the link our bio. #BrownMD50

On Thursday, April 1, Brown launched Phase II of its Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan, reaffirming the essential role of diversity and inclusion to academic excellence, and outlining new actions toward a more fully equitable community. In the five years since the Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan was implemented, Brown has increased diversity among faculty, staff and students, created new opportunities for underrepresented scholars to teach and conduct research, and established a campus-wide understanding of the essential roles that diversity, equity and inclusion play in Brown’s success as a leading research university.
