Opening today, Ed Fornieles’ exhibition, Inside Out 2, at Carlos/ Ishikawa. @eddfornieles @carlos_ishikawa What’s the impact of the virtual world on physical reality ? asks Ed Fornieles Ed Fornelies blurs the distinctions between the online and the offline and creates artworks that mirror social networks. The British artist imagines elaborate social scenarios which depict the difference between people’s real-life personalities and their online personae. Interested in the coming of age context, the artist orchestrates social settings during performances, making the audience participate and role play. For instance he created Dorm Daze, a work that played out on Facebook In which people inhabited the profiles of 34 archetypal Berkeley college students in a network. Eventually the flat archetypal characters evolved and developed depth as real people communicated on their personal live. His new show at Carlos Ishikawa introduces Oom a chat app he created to skip the small talk. Carlos/Ishikawa will present a new solo show of Antonio Tarsis at their booth for this edition of Art Basel Miami Beach. A week ahead of this highly anticipated opening, an exclusive drop of a work by Antonio Tarsis will be offered exclusively on Docent app. An artwork drop is a unique, time-sensitive release of a masterpiece that allows our most valued collectors to be among the first to acquire it. 📅 Make sure to note the date and time of Tuesday, November 28, at 2PM (CET). “Antonio Tarsis, a self-taught Brazilian artist, developed his artistic practice during his adolescent years when he couldn’t afford art materials. Collecting scrap objects, and painting walls and buildings in Salvador, he learned about the challenges of growing up in a favela. Now working in painting and installation, Tarsis challenges the idea that his body is predestined to disintegrate in the social conditions of Brazilian urban life, demonstrating that one can ‘exist in other ways.’ Still collecting found objects, he creates works out of Guarany matchboxes, presented in different shades of purple to indicate how long each box was lying on the street before being picked up by the artist. For Tarsis, these boxes carry the memory of those who once dropped them. Deeply intertwined with his life and identity, Tarsis’s works expose the structural violence toward the preciousness of human life while remaining true to the prospect of change.” . . . . . . . . . . #AntonioTarsis #carlosishikawa #london #painting #portrait #docentart #discoverdocent

Congratulations to Bendt Eyckermans (@bendteyckermans ), for his second solo exhibition with Carlos/Ishikawa (@carlos_ishikawa ) on view until December 23, 2023. If in London, don’t miss the chance to see his show; if not, explore Bendt Eyckermans’ profile on Docent to learn more about his practice. “What we’re witnessing is the act of witnessing itself; we’re observing the documentation, not the event. This sense forms the core of ‘Love Fulfilled,’ Bendt Eyckermans’ second solo exhibition at Carlos/Ishikawa in London. Eyckermans comes from five generations of sculptors. Sculptures loom in many of his paintings, at times overpowering and burdened by their own history—a nod to a complex personal history in relation to these objects, as well as colonial art history. The paintings are rife with contradictions and tensions: their spliced, ambiguous narratives resemble a Hitchcock film scene, describing a moment of tenderness or aggression, and hyperrealist bodies might conclude with a cartoonish ankle and foot. He obsessively paints mundane details in his compositions, alongside figures based on people close to the artist, who appear simultaneously dejected or determined—youth trapped in a very self-consciously European existence.” . . . . . . . . . . #bendteyckermans #carlosishikawa #london #painting #portrait #docentart #discoverdocent

이시 우드 Issy Wood ‘I Like To Watch’ Ilmin Museum of Art, Seoul 7 September – 12 November 2023 The exhibition marks Issy Wood’s first major institutional exhibition in South Korea, featuring 47 new paintings, as well as video works, and publications. “Wood portrays the contemporary world as a nuanced blend of equilibrium and disarray through her somewhat unsettling representations. Wood obsessively observes and paints vintage objects, young people’s fetishized luxuries, sexual metaphors, and unusual moments in her own life. Wood’s surfaces, imbued with dark and coarse humor, symbolize today’s anxiety, while utilizing motifs rooted in the traditions of Western art history.” Installation views ⓒ Ilmin Museum of Art. “No Sky is the first-ever survey exhibition of Tosh Basco, highly regarded for her hypnotic performances, movement-based work, and improvisations, which unfold across film, theater, drawing, and painting. This exhibition presents hitherto unseen works that the Filipino-American artist made over the last decade, including works on paper, oil painting, and photography. All the work in the exhibition, in various ways, can be considered as representation-by-touch and thus ask the viewer to think about alternative sensory modes of representation, challenging the dominance of the eye and mind, imitation, and idea.” 1st July to 15th October 2023
