Let’s eat! In 1972, Stephen Shore drove from New York to Amarillo, Texas. The result? ‘American Surfaces,’ a testament to the meals he ate on the drive and an inquiry into America’s soul—and stomach. Just over a half-century later, the legendary photographer has found himself returning to the series—digging through boxes of 35 mm film and digitizing forgotten shots. For CULTURED’s inaugural Art and Food edition, he shares a never-before-seen selection of these flash-soaked photographs, including a sausage-heavy memento that acts as the issue’s digital cover. Link in bio to dive into the full array of culinary delights. All photography: Stephen Shore, Untitled, 1972. Everyone’s thirsty for 070 Shake. The New Jersey native—and CULTURED’s second cover star for the inaugural Art and Food issue—broke onto the music scene in the mid-2010s with a wishlist of bonafides: a contract with kingmaking label G.O.O.D. Music, a debut EP with cult currency, and features with the likes of Nas, Kanye West, and Pusha T. In 2020, her first album, ‘Modus Vivendi,’ crystallized her status as a voice for a lost, lovesick generation perpetually “in their feelings.” But throughout Shake’s rise, the artist herself has remained a mystery, her face often hidden by her hair, her vocals digitally obfuscated, her public appearances sporadic. As she prepares to release her third LP this fall, the star is nowhere close to lifting the curtain on her persona, but she is ready to be heard more clearly. ‘Petrichor’ promises to be her most unfiltered and stripped-down body of work yet—an ode to what happens after the rain.  Link in bio to read @070shake ’s cover feature, penned by @jennydeluxe , and pre-order your copy of the inaugural Art and Food issue before it sells out.  070 Shake wears a suit by @gucci and vintage button-down from Palace costume. Over 40 years into his career, Willem Dafoe is more ravenous than ever. The unstoppable actor is the first cover star for CULTURED’s inaugural Art and Food issue. In the midst of a packed summer—Dafoe currently has nine films in production and appears in Yorgos Lanthimos’s heady thriller @kindsofkindnessfilm which hits cinemas this week—the Rome-based star sat down with a figure who looms just as large in the art world as he does on screen: Marina Abramović. The pair met years ago when Dafoe performed in a theater below the artist’s Manhattan apartment and have been steady collaborators since the mid-aughts. They share a penchant for off-color jokes, a relentless work ethic, and a gnawing hunger to create. “Maybe we’re just donkeys, and work is the carrot being dangled in front of us,” Dafoe tells Abramović in his cover feature. “It’s worked out pretty well for us so far.” Link in bio to dive into their free-wheeling conversation, and pre-order your copy of the inaugural Art and Food issue today.  Willem Dafoe wears clothing and accessories by @prada . Ye of little faith beware: The jelly shoe is here to stay! In the latest installment of her column “Iconic Items,” Fashion Editor-at-Large @alipew dives into the unexpected nostalgia of @therow ’s Mara Flat. A netted PVC shoe that comes in red, pink, clear, and “electric blue” color ways, the Mara Flat recalls the sandal’s fisherman origins and simple summer pleasures. Styled on the Pre-Fall 2024 runway with billowing maxi dresses and oversized separates, jelly shoes took on a previously unknown level of sophistication under the Olsen’s carefully crafted gaze. It’s a surprisingly whimsical combination—even more surprising coming from The Row. Link in bio to read more about the stealth wealth staple’s cult favorite shoe.

Martha Stewart really needs no introduction. For CULTURED’s Art and Food issue, the patron saint of good living sat down with Design Editor-at-Large, @colinking . When they spoke, the 82-year-old media mogul and doyenne of all things domestic was sitting outside her Bedford estate in a parked Polaris. It was barely past 12 pm, and she had already tended to her farm, taken several appointments, moved some furniture, done Pilates, and delivered bagels to either her team or her animals (it’s unclear whom she means by her “gang”). As she prepares to release her hundredth book this year, Stewart found a rare moment in her exceedingly packed schedule to chat about the current “Martha-ssance,” why she doesn’t DM, and the secret behind her famous dinner parties—all while attempting to take a photograph of a chipmunk in her garden.  Link in bio to read their conversation.

Closets loom large in our cultural imagination—from Harry Potter’s dreary living conditions at the Dursley’s to Carrie’s 'Sex and the City' walk-in—as vehicles for escape, fantasy, and extrafamilial intimacy. They’re where you put your armor to confront modern life on, and where you shed it at the end of the day. They’re great places to store things you’d rather forget. And they’re the perfect place to access another dimension—whether that’s Narnia or your 30s. In a new show at @52walkerstreet , Diamond Stingily embeds five closets—alternately filled with baseball bats, magazine pages, bricks, towels, and newspapers—into the gallery’s walls, alongside other works that point to a certain liminality, from stained glass windows to wrought iron gate fragments. The New York-based artist’s practice has often restaged spaces and objects that have defined her personal and cultural memory; here, she interrogates the things closets, church windows, and other thresholds witness—and what remains as a trace. Link in bio to read @ima_beat_yo_ass_on_dis_train on giving herself permission to revisit work, her fascination with portals, and the literary diet she's been following. 1/ Diamond Stingily, 'Orgasms Happened Here (Chicago),' 2024. 2/ Diamond Stingily, 'Orgasms Happened Here (Chicago)' (Detail Shot), 2024. 3/ Diamond Stingily, 'Orgasms Happened Here (Old News),' 2024.

"Do we love it? What kind of energy does it bring? What dimensions does it add? Can we afford it? What space will it occupy?" These are just a few of the factors Khalil Kinsey considers when acquiring art. The Los Angeles-based curator and collector grew up immersed in the art world—attending fairs, auctions, and exhibitions with his parents Bernard and Shirley, who founded @thekinseycollection —and is well-versed in the quirks of the market and fostering preservation efforts for work by Black Americans. Today, Kinsey is the COO and creative director of his parents' foundation, long nourished by their decades of travel and investment in illuminating the culture they encountered. At the link in bio, read more about how @dizgibraltar is shaping the next generation of his family's burgeoning art-world legacy. 1/ Khalil Kinsey and his family at home. “Real is a contentious word. What can be considered real and or verified does not necessarily mean that it is recognized or acknowledged on a micro or macro level.” Sundays in the studio, this time with Lorna Simpson. The Brooklyn-born-and-based multidisciplinary artist began her practice in documentary photography. Reckoning with the subjectivity of the medium, however, Simpson’s work became more conceptual, centering Black women and men to upend historical notions of race and gender. Her collages, which often feature models from ‘Jet’ and ‘Ebony’ re-contextualized with earthly materials or amongst the stars, craft a new world, one where Blackness is the beginning and the end of it all. Lensed here by @lelanief in 2021, @lornasimpson posed in front of a few works from ‘Everrrything,’ her first solo exhibition @hauserwirth Los Angeles that combined works in painting, film, video, and of course, photography. As writer @essenceh noted in CULTURED, the artist’s works put forth “a moment extending back and forward, a cyclical gesture that is a new cartography.” Link in bio to read more.
