Harpist Subin Lee premieres the winning composition of the @lyrasociety Costello Competition, Menagerie of Endangered Creatures: Blue, Vanishing by Luke Blackburn. Inspired by Blackburn’s research of the Miami Blue, an endangered butterfly native to Florida, each movement of Blue, Vanishing is meant to paint a certain period in the existence of these endangered butterflies: their past, their present, and their hopeful future.

The school year draws to a close with one last recital of solo works by Curtis composition students. Join all five current composition students tomorrow at 12 p.m. ET for a colorful program of new music. In works inspired by poetry and the visual arts, you will hear music both beautiful and bittersweet. Some harness the power of music to tell a story without saying a word while others incorporate video elements and electronics. In anticipation of performing chamber music again, one performer even accompanies herself!

Kick off your weekend on a high note and join us tomorrow (05/14) at 8 p.m. ET for the premiere of @lee.taekgi student graduation recital! Pianist Taek Gi Lee begins his recital with the serpentine Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue by J. S. Bach. The performance continues with a sonata by Domenico Scarlatti, one of 555 keyboard sonatas Scarlatti composed in the service of Barbara, Queen of Spain, followed by two evocative pieces from 20th-century France. After Sergey Prokofiev’s dissonant and emotional Piano Sonata No. 7, written during the bitterest years of the Second World War, the recital reaches a thrilling conclusion with a ferocious showstopper by Franz Liszt.
