This piece went to it’s forever home this week! A favorite of mine from my recent solo exhibition, 𝙀𝙣𝙙𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨… @eleanor_harwood_gallery and a direction I look forward to exploring more when I return from summer travels! This vase started out as test tiles for a much larger piece. I wanted to see how different glazes would fire on my ceramic wireframe sculptures at different horizontal and vertical orientations. I was so enamored by how cute these small structures were, so I made a based and zipped tied them together to form a vase! True to my work it addresses function, while also being somewhat impractical as it can’t hold water—a major feature of most vases! With a glass vase insert, however it can hold fresh flowers (and water!) or could be used for dried flower forever arrangements! The vase is an edition of 5, which is almost sold out - just one left! $250 ready for pick up this week! Contact @eleanor_harwood_gallery or myself for inquiries.

Tomorrowww!! 2-5pm! Join us for the opening of Helping Heads, an exhibition of collaborative work made by children and the adult artists in their lives. The opening includes a sock-puppet workshop by @puppetsagainstthepatriarchy (BYOSS: Bring Your Own Single Sock 🧦), kid DJ Valentina, live music by @robidouxstille and Barbie Dolphin Magic (@benjamin_vilmain and Frances), natural wine @villagevallejo and more! 🌈🧃🌸🪁 Dana Hemenway & Mare Beatrix Blue Hemenway Untitled (Tile/Quilt: from me to you #2 ) OSB wood, finger paint, ceramics, glaze, grout 30” x 12” x 9” 2024 Dana Hemenway (b. 1982) is an artist based in San Francisco. Her work is rooted in the excavation and elevation of utilitarian objects to make visible what has become habituated in our built environments. Hemenway uses these functional items as materials to form traditionally fiber-based crafts–– lights and cords are woven through ceramics or the gallery wall, extension cords are transformed into macramé chains. Hemenway has had residencies at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art (Omaha, NE), ACRE (Stueben, WI), SÍM (Reykjavik, Iceland), Joya: arte + ecología (Spain), The Wassaic Project (Upstate New York) and at Recology Waste Management (San Francisco). Dana is a 2024 Eureka Fellow, Fleishhacker Foundation and the recipient of The San Francisco Arts Commission Individual Artist Grant and a Southern Exposure Alternative Exposure Grant. She has a public art commission at SFO’s Terminal 1. Dana has exhibited her artwork locally, nationally, and internationally. From 2015 – 2017, Dana served as a co-director of Royal Nonesuch Gallery, an artist-run project space in Oakland, CA. She received her MFA from Mills College and her BA from University of California Santa Cruz. She is represented by Eleanor Harwood Gallery. #danahemenway #mothersday #helpingheads #personalspacevallejo

So excited to share a new work for my upcoming solo show, 𝙀𝙣𝙙𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨… at @eleanor_harwood_gallery Save the date! 📣 Opening Reception Friday, March 22, 5-7pm Untitled (Frame #2 - Flakes & Strips) Ceramics, LED U Light, custom wiring, hardware 24 x 24 x 3.5 inches Photos by @shaun.roberts.photo From the exhibition text: “Addressing hierarchies in architecture, art, and craft, Dana Hemenway’s work doesn’t offer a mirror image of her subjects. In 𝙀𝙣𝙙𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨…, she approaches her concerns obliquely— sometimes at a literal 90°— as ceiling fixture elements and rug-like textures make their way to the wall. Handbuilt clay forms take on structural roles, recalling steel and concrete, or veer into chunky, eclectic patterns. Woven and pierced intersections connect materials in gestures that nod to textiles and organic growth. Hardware and bare lightbulbs are close to the viewer and unshaded, more material than illumination.” — Maggie Haas @maggiehaas
