📰 via @Guardian : “What’s the draw of play? ‘It’s an essential theatre for children to enter the adult world, which they often mimic through games,’ Alÿs says. It’s also a forum for enacting dreams and imagining alternative futures.” Francis Alÿs: Ricochets, currently on view at @BarbicanCentre in London, transforms the gallery into a multiscreen film installation of Alÿs’s ongoing series Children’s Games. Ricochets—which also includes an expansive series of paintings and a new body of animated films depicting both traditional and lesser-known hand games— marks the first UK presentation of Children’s Games and the largest institutional show in the region of Alÿs’s work in nearly 15 years. 🇬🇷 Dana Schutz: The Island is now on view at the @GeorgeEconomouCollection in Greece (link in bio) The exhibition, which takes up three floors of gallery space, is distinguished by its vibrant colors and bold gestural techniques, and a portrayal of the artist’s evolving technique over the past few years. The Island brings together a concise group of 15 paintings and 5 works on paper that demonstrate how the artist’s skills have shifted and progressed, particularly over the last several years. The convergence of these mediums sheds light on the relationship between her approach to the monochrome format of charcoal drawing and the use of color in her paintings. —⁣⁣⁣⁣ Installation views, Dana Schutz: The Island, George Economou Collection, Athens, 2024. #PhilipLorcadiCorcia : “Photography . . . unites the obvious and the unconscious at the level of the liminal—the border between what we see and what we suspect.”⁣ American photographer Philip-Lorca diCorcia, born #onthisday in 1951, emerged in the 1980s as part of a generation of photographers who sought to explore and challenge the boundaries of the medium. Deploying his subjects in preconceived yet seemingly random positions and contexts, diCorcia’s images are far from candid snapshots; rather, they explore the tension between the casual and the posed, the accidental and the fated. —⁣⁣⁣⁣ Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Genesis, 2015 (detail)

When Diamond Stingily‘s family first moved into the home where she spent her adolescence, her brother discovered a sticky note affixed above the door of a closet in his bedroom that read, “Orgasms happened here.” In her presentation now on view at @52WalkerStreet , Stingily zeros in on the closet and other thresholds—locked doors, stained-glass windows, and ready-made gate sculptures—that symbolize privacy, transition, curiosity, and transgression. Throughout the exhibition, @ima_beat_yo_ass_on_dis_train has installed a series of site-specific architectural interventions that evoke the colors, scale, and ambiance of suburban American households and places of worship.
