Punk has established permanence in mainstream culture, not just as an aesthetic but as a lifestyle committed to independence in a conformist society. As punk rock approaches its 50th anniversary, PUNK LIVES showcases the rich history, vibrant present, and the exciting future of punk art.

I was drawn to punk rock as a teen because of the rebellion and creative independence, specifically the do-it-yourself spirit of the movement and its social commentary. Punk inspired me to make things, and the resulting self-empowerment has served as a blueprint for my entire career. The punk attitude and ethos of independence still inspire me today. I have been fortunate to work with and become friends with Jello Biafra (@jello_biafra_gsm ), a brilliant lyricist and conceptual thinker who is truly the embodiment of punk. I’m stoked to show this piece (based on photo by @glenefriedman ) and to have Jello be a part of PUNK LIVES! I’m excited to present PUNK LIVES, an exhibition celebrating punk and art with Destroy Art (@destroyartinc ) at my gallery @subliminalprojects . The show features pioneers from the 1977 punk scene, my new works, and contemporary punk-inspired artists to celebrate punk’s 50th anniversary. More details below...

Subliminal Projects and @destroyartinc invites our community to participate in PUNK LIVES! Alongside a visual dialogue between artists of punk art history, and contemporary punk-inspired artists, we are initiating a public participatory project that allows anyone from our audience to submit a digital punk flyer-inspired illustration. The chosen submitted works, that follow our detailed guidelines, will be printed and displayed in our hallway, paying homage to traditional punk venues and the foundation of punk art.
SUBMISSION RULES & GUIDELINES:
➤ Submission Deadline: July 5th, 2024
➤ 1 Submission Per Artist.
➤ Submissions will only be accepted digitally via email in PDF format. **Please do not mail or drop off physical work to the gallery, it will not be accepted.
➤ Submit to info@subliminalprojects.com with the subject line: Punk Lives Submission.
➤ The exhibition curators will select the work chosen to be displayed. Not all submitted work will be displayed.
Subliminal Projects is pleased to present PUNK LIVES, a group exhibition celebrating the intersection of punk and art, curated in collaboration with @destroyartinc , a Bay Area DIY punk art organization dedicated to supporting and promoting visual artists from the punk rock community. The multi-format exhibition will feature artistic pioneers of the original 1977 punk scene, a small selection of new works by gallery owner Shepard Fairey (@obeygiant ), a group of contemporary punk-inspired artists, and a public participatory flyer project that invites our community to submit a digital punk-inspired illustration that will be plastered along the gallery hallway, paying homage to traditional punk venues and the foundation of punk art. As punk rock approaches its 50th anniversary, PUNK LIVES showcases the rich history, vibrant present, and exciting future of punk art.
