🥽🪨 What appears to be a plastic inflatable chair is, in fact, 600 kg of solid Carrara marble. Masterfully crafted by @hanne.arends , this piece merges state-of-the-art technology with traditional craftsmanship to create a playful paradox through contrasting materials. 🪑 “Freddy Marbic believes he is made of plastic, and what he believes becomes his truth. Because that is the era we live in,” states Arend. This piece blurs the lines between reality and perception, merging two seemingly opposing materials into a familiar design. ♵⛏️ The manufacturing process began with a CNC machine roughly shaping the slab, followed by meticulous artisanal labor to complete the design. The final piece is polished to shine like plastic, challenging our understanding of both materials through their respective manufacturing processes.

The unique DNA of Eindhoven is at risk. A possible departure of @DesignAcademyEindhoven from this city raises serious concerns with us regarding Eindhoven and the future of the Academy. 👉 Read the open letter on DDW.nl Creative head Miriam van der Lubbe, and Dutch Design Foundation's directors Martijn Paulen and Katja Pahnke touch on the many ways DAE and Eindhoven are inextricably linked; not only due to the great value of the economic sector, but as an essential part of the DNA of the region and an important ground in realising the possible futures we want to live in. "Our heartfelt cry to everyone at the decision-making table of this dossier: please pull out all the stops to keep this valuable Eindhoven DNA intact for our future. Let’s not make an irreversible mistake. A solution to this crisis requires flexibility and an open mind, from both sides. We will continue to cooperate and offer our strength and expertise until that solution is found. So buckle down! Because once gone, it will be lost forever." . . . 📸 DAE Graduation Show DDW22 and DDW23 photographed by Max Kneefel. #heyddw 🐑💚 Christien Meindertsma's FLOCKS Wobot works as a 3D printer using wool, allowing for discarded local European wool to be industrially processed into three-dimensional structures without additional material by-products or water usage. 🦾🧶 Aiming to repurpose the tremendous amounts of raw wool that would be otherwise disposed of, the technique offers an environmentally friendly substitute for a wide range of materials by using a custom robot arm developed by TFT. Retaining the material properties of wool, including its strength, softness, warmth, and breathability, the method opens up many potential applications for this by-product, including locally sourced furniture, acoustic, and insulation applications. 🏆 The pioneering technique continues Meindertsma's research into the undervalued quality of local wool, demonstrated in De Zachte Stad with @RotterdamCirculair , a project winner of @DutchDesignAwards 2023 for Best Commissioning. 🔅 Inspired by the intricate forms of a sunflower’s inner disks, @rollo__studio ’s latest lamp collection transforms black sand into intertwining, spiralled 3D-printed structures that create an intricate play of contrast and colour in diffusing light. 🌻 Adhering to biophilic design principles, the wall-mounted lighting pieces embrace a unique surface geometry, folding and curving to layer light and shadow. The complex organic geometry infuses an earthy material with a gravitational aura, through which craftsmanship can be cherished in the era of additive manufacturing. 🌐 Harmonising into visual synchrony reminiscent of solar sands, the spiralling pattern, rooted in the enigmatic beauty of black sand, becomes almost hypnotic. 📸 Courtesy of the designer. #heyddw 👟 👩‍🚀 A running shoe designed to be worn on Mars, the Red Comet accounts for the low gravity of the red planet. With each shoe weighing 7.5kg, @nolan_le_goff ’s sneakers would recreate the conditions of exercising on Earth in Mars, by layering additional mass that would stimulate the body and prevent loss of muscle mass and bone density. 🔭👾 Speculating on the challenges of the Mars Exploration, the graduate from @designacademyeindhoven positions how shoes can become a tool to adapt to new environments and boost everyday living. 3D printed, they look at the of additive manufacturing not only as a mean for smart material use, but also distributing labour and production. 📸 Nicole Marnati #Repost @nolan_le_goff ・・・ The ‘Red Comet’ is a running shoe, designed to be used on Mars. It’s designed to prevent the loss of muscle mass and bone density on the red planet. The gravity of Mars corresponds to 38% of the Earth’s gravitational force. Unfortunately, low gravity is detrimental for the human body. The first Mars settlers will therefore suffer from the effects of low gravity. ‘Red Comet’ combats those effects with integrated weights to increase the wearer’s mass, stimulating the body as if the user was exercising on Earth. The project is born from a passion about Mars exploration and running. The shoes are 3D printed so they can also be manufactured in space, and their weight is 7.5Kg each. #mars #running
