‘the Function’ was dreamed up years before the dancing started - reading + writing + collecting + conversations with friends.
The first time it was actually embodied was mid-2020 where I danced very very alone about it for a very long time.
Then a few years where we could gather in groups again and a small collective of trusted family / dancers joined in. As it does, life got exciting and unexpectedly the dancing cast had to shift and also simultaneously the creative team expanded.
In 2022, when this now and current group of dancers set out to premiere (!!!) ‘the Function’ together, we were largely all strangers to one another. They stepped into an existing creative process, and from there we turned that process into a practice, and that practice into a performance, and WOW did they step out as a TEAM!
Since and throughout the many iterative versions of this dance, it has been my deep pleasure to witness + facilitate their bodies in collective thought, their brain effort to strategize this work, and their movement / artistry become more expansive. Their ever growing trust in themselves and one another has been visible, felt, alive, moving, and in no way simulated in the studio or during performance. Because of it, we get to learn more about what we have made, why we are making it, and what we are capable of each time. THEY DANCE this work into a reality.
This shit takes a village and there are many folks to thank —but right now and especially today —
THANK YOU to Maggie, Kiki, Keyierra, and Hannah. Look at this big collaborative universe we’ve made 💚 Now you get to make PERFORMANCE your practice for a little while.

THIS AND a casting update! Due to injury, @deandra.alaba has to step out of her scheduled guest performance while she heals. Deandra is an originating artist and I simply would not have created this without her. Her movement + thinking is all over this piece. She still be in the audience being our biggest cheerleader (thank you Dee Dee)!
LUCKY FOR US — the Function village is coming through! Thunder-study / Assistant Director @sarahellenmiller is getting in gear to step in on 5.31 for Dee/Hannah. WHAT A THRILL 🪩🪩🪩🪩.

creation is a vulnerable act. sharing it, even more so. this dance is charged and we are still discovering it — a heavy, tender, hot, hard, stupiddddd, messy, difficult to describe, can’t hold down thrill ride.
the team behind / with in Knockout has moved with great intentionality + mutual respect throughout our creative process together. i am reminded of it this week especially — what a mtherfcking gift.
