Present Absence How memories shape who we are A conversation with my grandpa I remember going on walks with my brother and grandpa in the forest next to my grandparents‘ house. My grandpa knew everything about the forest - the trees, the animals, the tracks, the birds. We used to sit in front of the window and watch different birds that were coming every day to the feeding station and birdhouses my grandpa set up. It was so calming to just listen to him telling all these different stories. He has always been playing such a huge role in my life as his positivity and optimism were very contagious. He always made me laugh and comforted me when I was sad. I wish I could talk to him again, tell him where I am at in my life and how much I miss him. Sometimes I wish I could ask him for advice. Doing nothing or simply waiting is seen as a waste of time. Why do we create these inhumane standards that we can never live up to? Why do we not stop for a second to look around us? We have forgotten about the beauty of the everyday, of being human. We do not take the time to dissect, to look at the identity we are erasing by doing so. Especially in today‘s fashion world, more clothing than ever is thrown away and eventually burned. This is not only destructive to the environment, but it also annihilates all the little stories they once carried. At least the awareness of the environmental impact is rising as recycling becomes a more common practice, but let‘s not forget about the steps before. We often jump to recycling, to mix all these things we do not have a solution for yet in order to create something new - fast. Let‘s take a step back.
