As part of its ongoing sponsorship of EXPO CHICAGO, Macerich’s Fashion Outlets of Chicago presented the inaugural Purchase Prize for THE COLLECTION: Where Art Meets Fashion, the shopping center’s multifaceted contemporary art program featuring a collection of curated site-specific artwork. At EXPO CHICAGO 2024, leadership from Fashion Outlets of Chicago commissioned a new artwork from artist Michael C Thorpe (@iversonsdurag ) selected from EXPOSURE section participant and Chicago-based gallery Anthony Gallery (@galleryanthony ). A look back at EXPO CHICAGO, where we gathered over 200 curators for our first ever curatorial conference: Curating and the Commons. Co-presented with Independent Curators International (ICI), the conference built on our longstanding initiatives the Curatorial Forum and Curatorial Exchange, providing a dedicated platform to foster future collaboration and dialogue among local, national and international curators of contemporary art and architecture. In its first year as part of the @friezeofficial network, EXPO CHICAGO reaffirmed its position as a convening moment for Chicago’s creative and philanthropic communities, showcasing the depth and breadth of the city’s cultural landscape. This year, IN/SITU is curated by @amaraantilla and presents site-responsive and large-scale work in installation, painting, photography, sculpture, sound, and video throughout the exposition. Anchored by Lucia Koch’s monumental installation of photographs depicting the void-like interiors of discarded cardboard containers, the exhibition explores themes of systemic economic failure, ecological instability, and political dissolution. Produced by an international cohort of artists, many of whom have ties the Midwest, the featured projects investigate collective unease during a fractured time, evoking revisionist histories, and moving beyond critique to imagine more just and sustainable futures.
