I sometimes forget I was tinkering in materials much earlier than when I started teaching versions of it. This was wall didactic on my show at @plhkgallery in 2014. When I was really really wondering, I briefly lived with Josh and Tim, from the Band, Fucking Champs. Josh once told me how much he liked technical liner notes. That stuck with me. One of my favorite projects was ‘Red Pictures’ with Phil Vanderhyden @phil_vanderhyden at Hudson Franklin Gallery, 2009. A great space in NYC run by @nicole.anne.francis At the time Phil and I were both kicking around ideas of ambient voids. I was interested in it through the lens of negative space in traditional portraits, and he was thinking of it in terms of abstract monochromes. Both of us were thinking about JL David. Death of Marat for Phil (black void in the background) Napoleon Crissing the Alpes for me (the cloak) The room was 4 paintings, all red. I made photoreal paintings of photo backdrops. 3/4th of the image read as flat, then bent in space with the folds of the cloth. Rumor was Jerry Saltz took a class too see it and said the show was painting with a capital ‘P’. I never saw this post by @whalebonesworld it but just wanted to say thank you Ron🦒. Ron, Israel and Tim (RIP) were such total Shredders. Watching them skate was watching magick everyday of the trip. That trip, and all the guys on it, were the best. And I learned things. In 2003-2005, I made ends meet by working as a studio henchman in LA. I worked for a variety of people, including Rebecca Morris @mrs.kozaki . I exclusively stretched and prepped canvases for her. She didn’t paint in the studio while I was there (I had to be distracting) But we talked freely and I enjoyed being around her. She was cool, thoughtful, & focused. She paid better than most and treated me with respect (what a concept🙄) So i was always happy to help. At the time I didn’t understand all the drop cloth watery, paint shenanigans. But it’s clear now she was already honing in a sensibility that has made her work bright, effervescent, structured yet open to expansive invention. I’ve never met anyone, before or since, able to navigate the challenging ambiguities of studio practice with as much confidence and skill as Rebecca Morris. It was really nice to see such a great collection of her work together at the MCA @mcachicago . I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again-she’s the Best Boss I ever worked for. I had dinner with Richard Serra once. I went to school with his nephews at Santa Cruz. We skated together. I was visiting them in NYC and we all went out to dinner. At the dinner, he was intense, and very interested in his nephews education. It was clear he cared about them & their well being. I kept my mouth shout most of the evening. i was intimidated. Near the end he focused on me and asked what I do. Just 21, I was Vague, ill formed and ill advised. My undirected sensibility did not impress him. At a certain point he quietly growled ‘….ya gotta look around’. Well, that’s just about the only good advice I’ve ever gotten as an artist, both in school and out. The precise clarity of his energy and that comment are a lesson I’m still learning. An Art career is brutal. Just brutal. Richard Serra, whatever you think of him, was just as hardcore as the task at hand. I’ll alway respect that Richard Serra and I’ll always remember the impact of that dinner.
