Did you know that every cover of Justin Favela: Fantasía/Fantasy, A Decade of Practice 2011-2021 is different? The end sheets are individually hand stamped, then the strips of tissue paper that make up the cover design are hand placed before each book is shrink wrapped. 🥵🫣🫠🤫 — #artbook #limitededition #publicationdesign

Earlier this year I was invited to participate in Kohler’s Arts/Industry foundry residency at the Kohler Factory in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. With the guidance and expertise of artist and technician, William Rice, I spent 3 months at the factory making experimental works with cast iron, brass and found objects. I am currently in my Dorito/Corn Chip/Nacho era and made different versions of this iconic symbol at the factory (more posts soon). The sculptures featured here are cast iron versions of the cardboard chips I have installed in the past. Special thanks to all of the factory workers and staff that also helped along the way! As part of the 50th anniversary of the Arts/Industry program some of the work I made at the factory will be on view at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in late August. I was also invited to make a giant paper nacho environment at the Arts Center for their “Workplace” residency. You can come by and help make the installation with me now through July 20. - First and last photo courtesy of Kohler Co.

Breaking News! After 10 years of performing labor for cultural institutions, I have finally decided to rest. Reposo: A Hispanic Artist Rests for the Entirety of Hispanic Heritage Month at the National Hispanic Cultural Center September 15 - October 15 Tuesday - Sunday 10am-4pm Project Description: In this durational performance, artist Justin Favela will rest for the entirety of Hispanic Heritage Month at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This performance challenges capitalistic views of labor and human value, the performance of racialized and gendered labor, and examines what it means to be an Hispanic/Latinx/Latine artist working in the art world today. As the artist rests for the month, his decision to not take on any work during this time will be an opportunity to confront his own values about labor and self-worth, while finally actually taking time off to heal and listen to his body. This piece is inspired by the work of many that came before him, including recent work by Tricia Hersey and the @thenapministry . It is also informed by the artist’s interest in the history and significance of the stereotype of the ‘lazy/sleeping Mexican’ and the souvenirs made to promote this idea. Favela is also tired as hell from being overworked and underpaid for the last decade of his career. This performance marks a point in the artist’s life where he is truly stepping back and analyzing what it means to rest. Favela will be resting at the NHCC in the Visual Arts Building. During this time, the artist is available for casual visits with the public. However, he is unable to participate in interviews during this time because he is resting. Artist Justin Favela (@FavyFav ) installed a piñata paper mural over the course of a couple of days with the help of volunteers for “Vistas in Color,” on display through October 1! Favela’s floor-to-ceiling work honors the sweeping desert landscapes of the U.S. and Mexico and the role that they’ve played in #Latinx identity. #timelapse

Repost • @mochusss Last month I spent a week in Springdale, Arkansas with @favyfav putting together la Family Fiesta at the Jones Center with @liveinamericacommunity . When I was brand new to the States in Springdale, missing my country, my friends, my language, and the warm Salvadoran way of life, it was at the Jones Center that my sister and I would go hang out, and try to stay connected to our life back in El Salvador through email and msm messenger at the center's computer lab. So when it was a matter of thinking of a place to host the Family Fiesta, the Jones Center was the best choice to bring my family and the community back together. My mom was the glue to our whole piñata adventure, knowing what pupusas truck to get and helping my sister make 250 charamuscas and a bunch of chocobananos for the celebration, helping with the mini piñatas and the decorations. It was important for us to support local, immigrant-owned businesses as much as we could that week. One of them being Los Alamos Market in Springdale, where @favyfav has his ¡Sofrito! Pop up art show. Open now through August 17. Thanks to @mikaylawhitmore for all these great #FamilyFiesta pictures!
