It’s called the Orfeo ed Euridish Towel, and we aren’t even the slightest bit sorry about the corny wordplay.😌 For his gift to the cast of this season’s revival of Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice, countertenor @ARCostanzo collaborated with materials scientist and Ph.D. student Jack Forman (@FormaJ ) to create the Orfeo ed EuriDish Towel! Developed in the @MITMediaLab and Center for Bits and Atoms, this towel contains an image made from hydrophobic ink that was intricately patterned using an experimental screen-printing process. Through the moisture of Orfeo’s tears, a fleeting image of the doomed couple appears before their tragic reseparation. The image is a halftone encoding of the illustration by Charles Monnet from the 1764 original printed score, and the superimposed “Orfeo” text is Gluck’s handwriting, extracted from the 1762 original manuscript. Use it to dry your eyes during the show—or your dishes after the post-performance midnight snack. The image is ephemeral, just like the human voice, so the towel must be used to be enjoyed! Get yours now at the Met Opera Shop (linked in our bio).💦 Orfeo ed Euridice is on stage through June 8. Mark Morris’s breathtaking production stars Costanzo and soprano Ying Fang (@yingletsings ) in the title roles. J. David Jackson conducts. Book your tickets now at the link in our bio. Super excited to finally be sharing my most recent publication! In this work, I built a low-cost desktop fiber extrusion system to produce hundreds of meters of liquid-crystal fibers. These fibers, dubbed FibeRobo, are thin (~150 microns), self-reversing, high-strain (~35%), and can be body-temperature responsive (~40°C).  This fiber allows textiles to react swiftly and noticeably when heated with electricity or in response to changes in body temperature—notably, the fiber re-elongates when cooled and can be cycled hundreds of times. Secondly, FibeRobo’s fabrication process is reproducible, scalable, and low-cost, ensuring we can integrate it into existing textile manufacturing and fashion pipelines with minimal disruption. With FibeRobo, our interdisciplinary team developed several functional applications: a remote-controlled canine compression vest, a dynamic blossoming lampshade, a silently retracting curtain, and a sports bra that provides additional support during a workout.  I presented and demoed the work at UIST ‘23. The work received news coverage from Popular Science and MIT News. A video of the work published on Instagram by Interesting Engineering received over 12 million views in less than a week! The work recently won gold in the 2024 International Design Awards textile category. This is just the start for this humble fiber, and I’m so excited to reveal what else we have been working on!

Check out the new article featured on the homepage of mit.edu! So proud of this work and the radically interdisciplinary team I had the privilege of leading.

Had a transcendent, hedonistic, and inspiring time in Berlin and Berghain (My secret to getting in: only wearing clothes I bought with my mom). @tilokrueger my IDEO friend from CMU was the best host. @mertoka @a_nna_eva and I danced for 17 hours straight! Once I recovered I went to @hpi_de to give a guest talk at Prof. Patrick Baudisch’s Human-Computer Interaction group. I loved all the challenging questions posed :)

Boy, the way you blowin up my phone won’t make me leave no faster, put my coat on faster, leave Gaga no faster. Seeing Lady Gaga live was something I dreamed of since being a closeted kid in middle school. Doing so with two amazing friends was the cherry on top. 🖤🖤🖤
