THE SUMMER ISSUE IS OUT NOW The Summer issue of frieze asks how — and where — contemporary art communities live. Our columns section circles around the built environments that shape us, from new developments in Côte D’Ivoire to the imaginary spaces of artist Minoru Nomata. In the features section, Blk Art Group member Marlene Smith speaks to Lubaina Himid about the benefits of direct collaboration; Rianna Jade Parker surveys Jamaica’s Intuitive artists; and Dan Fox profiles the radical work of American publisher Primary Information. We also see how four radical galleries in Tokyo have curated generation-crossing programmes, photographed by our cover artist, Hanayo. For this issue, subscribers will receive a special zine of Hanayo’s photographs of Tokyo today. Plus loads more — hit the link in bio. [frieze no. 244 - Summer 2024] Cover: Solami and Dango, 2018. Lawrence Lek is the winner of the Frieze London 2024 Artist Award! 🌟   The award – in partnership with @formaartsmedia – gives an early- or mid-career artist the opportunity to realize an ambitious new commission at Frieze London.   @lawrencelek ’s multimedia installation for the Artist Award commission, ‘Guanyin: Confessions of a Former Carebot’, combines narrative worldbuilding and mechanical sculpture in a gaming environment where players gradually uncover the story of the eponymous ‘carebot’: a cyborg therapist developed to talk other AI out of self-destruction.   Learn more about Lek’s work and the Frieze Artist Award at the link in bio.   #FriezeLondon   Global Lead Partner - @deutschebank @deutschebankart   Images: 1. In Athens, female artists have taken over the National Museum of Contemporary Art. The all-women programme 'What if Women Ruled the World?' addresses gaps in the art historical canon. The programme shares its name with a 2016 neon work by the Berlin-based artist Yael Bartana, installed on the North and South facades of The National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens (ΕΜΣΤ). The inspiration for a four-part cycle of exhibitions dedicated to female-identifying artists, Bartana’s installation has been a guiding light for Katerina Gregos, the institution’s director, during the almost one-year-long cycle, which started in December 2023 and has just entered its final phase. ‘We're a public museum,’ Gregos explains, ‘and I believe that means we should be putting issues that matter on the table in a very vocal way.’ Read more at the link in bio. @emstathens @katerina.gregos #ΕΜΣΤ —— Words: @chloeellenstead Images: 1. London will soon be home to a new AIDS Memorial, which will occupy a plaza on Store Street, Fitzrovia. Anya Gallaccio, the artist behind the winning design, discusses taking up space, celebrating those lost and creating something Londoners can see themselves in. The undersung YBA pioneer whose multi-sensory, ephemeral installations, while often substantial in scale, are anything but grandly monumental. Gallaccio’s design comprises a tree of life with rings poignantly removed, signifying a generational loss that’s still palpable today. But, Gallaccio is quick to note, the memorial will be a message to the present as much as to the past: more than 100,000 people in the UK are living with HIV, and infection rates are rising in certain populations. The epidemic continues. Read more at the link in bio. #anyagallaccio @aidsmemoryuk —— Words: @evanpmoffitt Images: 1. Anya Gallaccio, 2024. Courtesy: © GW 4/6. Marlene Smith and Lubaina Himid discuss friendship, collaboration, their histories and the fear and excitement of creating new works: 'It sometimes feels as though there isn’t a space for us to be like other artists and just be excited about what we’re doing next and making art that may or may not be deemed successful. Of course, we can do this in our own spaces and in our own conversations. But, quite often, we are still restricted by cowardly contexts.' - Lubaina Himid Continue reading at the link in bio. [frieze no. 244 - Summer 2024] Marlene Smith’s ‘Ah Sugar’ will be on view at @cubitt_gallery , London, from 22 August until 18 October, and Lubaina Himid’s ‘Make Do and Mend’ will be on view at @contemporaryatx until 21 July. —— Images: 1.
