“Technology always shapes music if you think about it. In the 1920s, the orchestra was at its peak—classical orchestras playing great works by composers who were like rock stars.” —Trevor Horn The mind behind some of the most legendary pop stars of the 1980s and ’90s, including Grace Jones, Pet Shop Boys, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Yes, and the Buggles, produced one of the music industry’s most unexpected and enjoyable recent memoirs: “Trevor Horn: Adventures in Modern Recording. From ABC to ZTT.” In a piece for “Gagosian Quarterly,” Young Kim (@youngkim.xyz ) reports on the elements that make the book, and Horn’s life, such a treasure to engage with. “Theaster Gates: Le chant du centre” opens today, June 30, at LUMA Arles (@luma_arles ) in France. “Le chant du centre,” which translates to “The Song of the Center,” is an intervention by Theaster Gates (@theastergates ) that transforms the Grande Halle of LUMA Arles into a ceramic workshop. At the center of the workshop, Gates continues the “Temple”—the artist’s series of sanctuary-like spaces intended to inspire contemplation and dialogue. Here, the “Temple” is the central installation, made from wooden ware boards (used to store in-progress pottery) that hold his personal vinyl collection, a bar, and other artworks. Conceived as a durational and demonstrative installation, the work will be in constant evolution as new wares and sculptures are produced and fired, thereby creating new forms of engagement with each visit. Wishing a happy birthday to Richard Wright, who was born on this day, June 29, in London! Wright is known for large-scale and site-specific painted and applied metal-leaf installations that incorporate graphic and decorative elements. On the occasion, we’re highlighting Wright’s “No Title,” which was produced in 2023 for an exhibition at Gagosian, London, alongside a publication and poster featuring the work. The comprehensive monograph surveys works made by the artist between 2010 and 2020, documenting projects produced for both well-known public spaces and otherwise inaccessible private residences around the world. Follow the link in our bio to order the monograph or poster from Gagosian Shop (@shopgagosian )! _____________ #RichardWright #Gagosian (1) Installation view, “Richard Wright,” Gagosian, Davies Street, London, March 29–May 13, 2023. An exhibition of new works by Theaster Gates (@theastergates ), titled “Black Mystic,” closes today, June 29, at Gagosian, Le Bourget. Employing industrial roofing materials, Gates extends his series of tar paintings or “torch works” into monumental tapestries that are installed in the expansive venue at Le Bourget. Continuing the formal experimentation in his practice, this body of work sees Gates further his material investment in rubber torch down, delivering his tar paintings to the scale of a roof. “Theaster Gates: Le chant du centre” opens this weekend at LUMA Arles (@luma_arles ). “Le chant du centre,” which translates to “The Song of the Center,” is an intervention by the artist that transforms the Grande Halle of LUMA into a functioning clay studio. __________ #TheasterGates #Gagosian Installation views, “Theaster Gates: Black Mystic,” Gagosian, Le Bourget, April 13–July 29, 2024. “Andy Warhol & Keith Haring: Party of Life” opened today, June 28, at Museum Brandhorst (@museumbrandhorst ) in Munich. The exhibition relays the cosmos of the 1980s—MTV, discos, vogueing, hip-hop, New Wave, and graffiti—and traces Keith Haring’s and Andy Warhol’s friendship through those years. The exhibition reveals parallels in their artistic identity and demonstrates how their works from the 1970s and 1980s, created at a time of extreme sociopolitical tension, are still highly relevant today. Bringing together famous key works as well as film, photography, archival material, posters, records, and everyday objects, the exhibition also highlights projects created with other artists, including Richard Avedon and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Today, June 28, Katharina Grosse (@katharina_grosse ) and Stefan Schneider (@tal.label ), an innovative figure in the world of electronic music, will perform together inside Grosse’s exhibition “Déplacer les étoiles,” at Centre Pompidou-Metz in France. The performance will take place in the spirit of their collaborative album from 2017, titled “Tiergarten.” The site-specific exhibition sees more than 8,000 square meters of brightly colored fabric suspended by enormous knots from the soaring ceilings of the Grande Nef, the museum’s large space designed for the presentation of monumental artworks. The event is free to attend with museum admission on a first-come, first-served basis. “Sunday,” Maurizio Cattelan’s first solo gallery exhibition in more than two decades and his solo debut at Gagosian, closes on Saturday, June 29, at the gallery’s West 21st Street location in New York. The exhibition, which is curated by Francesco Bonami (@thebonamist ), challenges the contradictions of American society and culture, and touches on sensitive issues faced by the world at large. Visitors to the gallery are immediately confronted by a towering, 17-foot-tall wall of the gilded panels that stretches some 68 feet wide. In front of it is “November,” a marble fountain that portrays a slouching figure urinating on the ground. Cattelan characterizes the work as “a monument to marginality,” an image of a reality that we habitually ignore. Anselm Kiefer’s debut solo exhibition in Greece is now on view at Gagosian, Athens, featuring new and recent paintings, sculpture, and photography. Kiefer’s landscapes convey poetic responses to myth, history, and the natural world, evoking themes of creation, metamorphosis, and the cyclical nature of existence. These works are united by the artist’s juxtaposition of the luminosity of gold with the visual and symbolic resonance of other mediums including oil and acrylic paint, shellac, straw, and fabric. An exhibition of works by Kiefer is running concurrently at Gagosian in New York. The show, titled “Punctum,” is the first in the United States to center exclusively on Kiefer’s photography.
