Shana Moulton, Meta/Physical Therapy, 2023 Video, 14’54’’ (excerpt), Edition of 5 + 2AP Courtesy of the artiste and Crèvecœur, Paris. Through performance, video, and sculpture, Moulton chronicles the experiences of her semi-autobiographical alter-ego, Cynthia, as she navigates personal choices and physical limitations. The video employs the artist’s signature blend of spiritual imagery, medical technology, popular culture, and references to high art and dollar-store kitsch. An extension of Moulton’s Whispering Pines series, which began in 2002, the project continues the artist’s incisive examination of the aesthetics of pain and healing and the mass marketing of wellness, and explores the maladies of middle age.

The depiction of time, as it passes, as it wounds, as it changes the course of an existence, as it marks an era or else as it stretches out unendingly, has never been easy in art. Generally, too fleeting, the many attempts to represent it by painters like Claude Monet remain approximate and, today, only time-based media seem suited to accompanying artists in this quest. Yet, in the early 2020s, it was by using figurative painting that Jonny Negron gave form to what he calls “temporal sequences”. And his way of painting figures could not be clearer, more accessible and thus generous. Principally, this artist sets human figures in contemporary atmospheres, handling or holding everyday objects, cultivating a certain obsession with materialism. They obey an archetypal vision of humanity, which is seemingly simple and close to standard. There are also young, tall athletic men who all look alike, voluptuous women with large eyes and artfully, though rather excessively, painted nails. The generosity and precision of the lines, the simplicity of the contours and an ease of appreciation characterise his pictorial work. While not attempting to depict complex personalities or moods, he employs a figuration which is seemingly naive to convey cryptic messages, which transcend an initially simplistic impression. 📸 Jonny Negron, La Vision del Pan, exhibition views, Crèvecœur, Paris. Ongoing fresco painting by Nino Kapanadze at @societadelleapi 🩵 — The fresco painting is depicting late springtime woods where two trees, not at the exactly central part of the composition, cross and represent a sign X only through certain viewing point, without ever actually touching each other. This image is materialising an instant of this viewing point which otherwise lacks to be drawn at the three dimensional coordinate system. Making the illusion real. — 📸 Nino Kapanadze, X, 2024 Fresco (Buon Fresco), 555 x 367 cm at Le Moulin des Ribes, Grasse, France Technical assistant: Marius Allier Photo: Nino Kapanadze
