As the sunshine and social season descended on London, so did the second hosting of the Treasure House Fair @treasurehousefair and Gem X London was there to seek out the jewels.
Hosted in the centre of the historic Royal Hospital Chelsea, members were treated to a tour of the gem and jewellery exhibitors from near and far, trying on our favourite pieces from stand to stand. Highlights included spectacular 100 carat gems by @robertprocopgems , who hosted a talk on the unique nature and miraculous occurrence of his exquisite collection of gems - most notably a 100.08ct cushion-cut diamond and a stunning 108.20ct Mozambique Paraiba tourmaline.
On matters of jewels themselves, Treasure House was certainly a treasure trove as period and antique specialists presented a dazzling array of collections from the 17th and 18th century alongside Art Deco, mid-century and contemporary jewels. From Greens of Cheltenham, @wartski1865 , @alavieillerussie to @sandracronan and @s_j_phillips , it was a feast for the senses and soul. A group drink and social was the perfect conclusion to a jewel-filled evening. In the private jewelry salon at @bergdorfs , members were enchanted with the joyful gems of @gyanjaipur 🩷❤️ Inspired by the hues of Jaipur, we were delighted to talk with Akhil and Nikhil Dhaddha about the history and influences of their house. We tried on one-of-a-kind jewels of delicate latticework bracelets, transformational emerald choker to bracelet, and a show stopping 120 carat Rubellite Necklace. The new jewel exhibition "Maximalist | Minimalist: Silvia Furmanovich and Mr. Lieou" opened at the Louisa Guinness Gallery this week and Gem X London was there to celebrate. Hosted by @louisaguinness herself, members gathered for an intimate coffee morning to see the bold and beautiful jewels of @silviafurmanovich alongside @mr.lieou designs of elegance, subtly and grace. Running from June 12th to June 26th, this wonderful showcase explores the juxtaposition of these two renowned designers, each with their unique artistic language, the jewels of which we had the pleasure of handling and trying on with special insight from Silvia as to how they were made. On our final morning in Boston we took a trip to see what fantastical creations Michael Robinson of @davidmichaeljewels has been working on. We were able to try on whimsical chandelier earrings and flip through the many notebooks and old coloring books full of sketches. From start to finish, the process of creating a piece of David Michael is a work of art. Even the furnishings around the space had been reconstructed by Michael to custom fit all of his unique jewels. It was a joy to be surrounded by such color and craftsmanship! Who doesn't love a behind-the-scenes-access of a world class art museum? Gem X certainly does and members in London were treated to just that this week. Hosted at the Victorian and Albert Museum @vamuseum , members met with master gem carver Charlotte de Syllas and Clare Phillips, V&A Curator of the Department of Decorative Art and Sculpture, to see Charlotte's masterpiece, the Magpie Necklace - now installed in pride of place at the V&A's Jewellery Gallery.
Gathered around her jewel, Charlotte explained her meticulous process, her decision making in pairing fine gem materials together and her long-standing collaborations with craftsmen all over the world. Members were then treated to an afternoon backstage, for a hands-on presentation of her working models and materials, helping us understand her pursuit of extremes in creating shape and subtle articulation, alongside the chance to handle her curated archive of jewels. After a busy day at the @mfaboston , Gem X members left feeling inspired and went searching for stones to make our own creations. Gem X London had a spellbinding gem encounter earlier this week, hosted by jeweller, gemologist and gem-matching expert Doris Hangartner 💎 @dorishangartner is an expert in the art of gem-matching – Zurich-based jeweller in her own right, she is gifted with a rare intuition and connection with gemstones, allowing her to connect individuals with stones that resonate with their individual essence.
London members were hosted at Claridge’s for an evening of sweet treats, her beautiful jewels and intimate gem matches, allowing us to meet stones that connected with our most authentic selves. The group went around the table sharing personal stories and anecdotes to paint a picture of who we were for our best gem match. Some were drawn to the bewitching hue of tanzanite, others the imitable pull of paraiba – Doris’s signature. All of our individual gems eventually made up the most beautiful gemstone mandala, in tribute to the power of gems bringing people together. The perfect way to spend a Monday! After leaving “Beyond Brilliance” we stepped into “Dress Up”, a @mfaboston exhibition organized by @jewelcurator and @ms_theotyson exploring over 150 objects of identity and self-expression through jewelry, fashion, and photography. Mannequins donned dresses with sequined fabrics, beads, delicate embroidery work, and denim jackets emblazoned statement pins. We flocked around designer Paul Gaultier and artist Mariko Kusumoto’s, “Big in Japan'' ensemble, cuff bracelets designed by Fulco di Verdura for Coco Chanel, hand-beaded earrings of traditional weaving patterns by Tiffany Vanderhoop, and an ensemble from Iris Apfel. We concluded our tour with a talk given by Emily with a more in-depth look into the collection. Thank you again to Emily for hosting us! #gemx#gemxboston
