NOW OPEN / Organized by Alissa Bennett, ‘The Secret History’, is a group exhibition titled after Donna Tartt’s beloved mystery told in reverse.
“I suppose in many ways, I think ‘The Secret History‘ is a book that ponders why we so often fail to calculate that the world doesn’t always change in the ways we think it does; it’s not just us who are dissatisfied, people have always looked for ways to escape.“ — #AlissaBennett

#OnView / @FondationCartier presents Matthew Barney: SECONDARY, the artist‘s first institutional exhibition in France for over a decade. The new work demonstrates the complex superposition of real violence, its representation, and the culture of spectacle. Barney's interdisciplinary work allows viewers to explore the complex connections between myth-making, material potential, physical capability, and the looming threat of entropic collapse.
Matthew Barney: SECONDARY is on view until September 8, 2024 at The Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Paris.

@FLAGArtFoundation ‘s group exhibition ‘The Swimmer‘ is inspired by John Cheever's 1969 short story of the same name. The show includes Jim Hodges’ “If There Had Been a Pool it Would Have Reflected Us,“ a tan and turquoise blanket that resembles an imaginary landscape. Hodges‘ work often blurs the lines of an object‘s intended function and meaning.
Navigating themes inherent in ‘The Swimmer‘ and Cheever’s broader oeuvre, including alcoholism, grandiosity, loss of innocence, selective memory, privilege, sexuality, etc., the exhibition trains an eye to the crumbling of an American dream, set against the glittering backdrop of a string of swimming pools. On view through August 9, 2024.

#OnView / Carrie Mae Weems: Remember to Dream examines the evolution of her creative, politically engaged practice over the past 30 years, tracing significant moments of racial reckoning in the United States through the artist’s own lens. @CCSBard highlights an array of works from large-scale installations to serial bodies of photography, and foregrounds lesser-known works that draw in the context of Weems’ lived experiences and commitment to activism. Through investigations of history, identity, and power, Weems‘ work sheds light on the connections between personal experience and the structures and institutions that shape people’s lives. On view through December 1, 2024.

NOW OPEN / Joeun Kim Aatchim: Minimally Invasive (최소침습) marks the artist’s first exhibition at Gladstone Seoul with new paintings and drawings on silk, a site-specific audio installation, and sculptures. Referring to the idea of a memory palace–an imagined structure that serves as a mnemonic aid and as a home for one’s memories–the artist uses the resources of her multidisciplinary practice to construct a physical and metaphysical space for remembrance.

Dear Friends,
It is with great sadness that we share with you that Barbara passed away yesterday in Paris after a brief illness. Barbara was a visionary leader who had an indelible impact on the artists she worked with, her colleagues at the gallery, her many friends, and the entire art world.
Barbara valued her relationships with artists above all else and remained their advocate up until the end. She championed artists who are breaking new ground with their work and stood with them as they developed their practices, noting that “you have to sense in someone’s work the possibility of longevity.”
With thanks for your support and love,
Max, Gavin, Caroline, and Paula
