Hackers & Designers Summer Camp 2024 Unruly Currents & Everyday Piracy is happening 15 – 25 July 2024 at Het Wilde Weg @het_wilde_weg During camp, 30 residents will embark on an adventure of learning, making and living together. With this format we aim for a holistic and intersectional way of thinking about and practicing sustainability (socially, ecologically, economically, culturally) and reknit the sometimes arbitrary boundaries between work, play, leisure, maintenance and care. On several mornings and on the weekend, we open the camping grounds for visitors to join us for short workshop activities that are open to the public. This year’s intergenerational public program (ages 6 to 106) is a collaboration with MU Hybrid Art House @mu_hybrid_art_house Read the program and sign up on our website (link in bio) 🐜 Graphic design by @axiatonal This program is made possible with the support of @stimuleringsfonds

[Re]work session {(1)}: Breaking the Organigram 📆 Fri 28 June 2024, 17-19:30 📍H&D Studio NDSM-plein 127, Amsterdam @ndsmloods @art.city.ndsm We are inviting you to the first of a series of informal [re]work sessions that explore how – as self-organized communities involved with cultural work – we can continue to develop and sustain ourselves. We are particularly interested in exploring together with peers the tools and infrastructures that enable and/or hinder our collective work. For the upcoming session we will be joined by Taylor Le Melle @melrose_tay from not/nowhere @not.nowhere , an artist workers’ cooperative that programmes workshops, screenings, exhibitions and other events and Sarah Payton @sarahpayton214 who is an artist and community organizer @art.city.ndsm in Amsterdam. Together we will explore the situatedness of different decentralized organizational practices. Drawing from participants personal experiences, approaches and modalities within/as collectives and self-organizations as well as hands-on exercises we will imagine together different ways of configuring labor, care and infrastructure that nourish communities and strengthen allied networks. RSVP: Let us know you are coming by sending an email to info@hackersanddeisgners.nl [ ID: A warped grid like structure within which an organigram is embedded. It contains white and black dots of different sizes, and light yellow boxes. ] Thank you to @stimuleringsfonds @afk020

Criptastic Hack Meeting: Riding / Snorkeling / Surfing and Burrowing into Time Undercurrents 🌊 🕒 🌊 ⌛ 🌊 🕜 ⏰ 🌊 H&D (@pennanilla , @grooooten , Karl Moubarak, @_hrk______j ) and @meltionary (Ren Loren Britton & Iz Paehr) warmly invite you to join us for a criptastic hack meeting – a hands-on workshop that brings together MELT's imaginative and speculative design approach to dreaming up Anti-Ableist technologies with H&D's hands-on hacking approach to imagining more regenerative and equitable techno-futures. With this workshop we use a hacking approach to actively counter the notion of universal time and turn toward practices that tune into 'crip time'. Crip time shows that there are other ways of being in time: slow, in attunement with pain or symptoms, with JOMO (joy of missing out), in resistance towards capitalisms temporal demands. We will imagine and build clocks that work against gregorian clock time and instead propose crip time, a way of considering the body as something that is constantly changing, that may go through and stay in states of illness, exhaustion and disability. Such clocks attune to different individual and collective temporalities. 🤓 The workshop caters to tech savvy people as well as folks new to coding. There will be some hacking with the (e-paper) watchy watches and some analog prototyping for those who prefer. 🕗 Sat, 22 June 2024, 11.00 – 16.00 📍 NDSM-plein 127, 1033 WC, Amsterdam 📙 Spoken language will be English. There are Dutch speakers present and are happy to help translate if necessary. 🍽️ (Vegan) lunch, tea, coffee and snacks will be provided. 🌐 For online participants: Automated captions will be activated in the Zoom Conference. ⬆️ See H&D website for access info regarding the physical space [ ID: A screenshot of a p5js sketch shows blue waves rolling in a circular motion, overlapping, curving with slight randomness. ] Thank you @stimuleringsfonds @afk020

🌱 This summer H&D is coming back to Het Wilde Weg, and is looking for 20-30 co-inhabitants of all ages for our temporary H&D village! During the 10th edition of the H&D Summer Camp we will embark on the many adventures around unruly currents and everyday piracy, and alongside we will experiment, tinker, learn, make and live together! 🐛 H&D is open for proposals for a variety of activities that contribute to an exhilarating communal experience! We are looking for various hands-on workshops that explore alternative (sustainable, non-extractivist, equitable) technical and social imaginaries. Shorter activities are also welcome such as presentations, film screenings, gameplays, dance nights, guided walks, fireplace readings, foraging, publishing activities, gymnastics, and the likes. 🦋 The call welcomes ‘everyday pirates’ (hackers / designers / makers / artists / developers / activists / inventors /...) of all ages, skills, abilities and backgrounds to propose activities. H&D is collaborating with the educational department of MU Hybrid Art House to develop a dedicated parallel track for and with children and young adults between the ages of 6 and 12. We therefore welcome kids to the camp and encourage submissions that are inclusive to younger participants and/or proposals for inter-generational formats. We aim for an equal balance within the program with regards to accommodating different ages, abilities and experiences. 🐜 This year’s theme invites to reflect on and actively reject predominant principles of our contemporary socio-technical reality such as “ownership”, “property”, “newness” and “innovation.” 🕸️ Together we will explore what it means not to do new things and not to make new stuff and instead explore what is already there through methods of repair, reuse, regeneration, maintenance, continuation, invitation and documentation. 👀 Read the call in English and Dutch on our website and apply before May 1st! 🎨 Graphic design by @axiatonal ✏️ Typeface by Laure Azizi @laureazz 🔗 With the generous support of @stimuleringsfonds

Archeological excavation: Solar-Common Computing ✏️ Join us on the 15th of March at the H&D studio for a unique voyage into the remnants of this enigmatic website. date 15.3.2024 time 17:00 at H&D Studio with @slvi.e & clitch 💻 Bring your laptop if you can. From the digital ruins, we unearthed an old forum frozen in time. Dust-covered usernames hint at those who once roamed these virtual halls. Each post is a fossilized thought, a piece of a community that once thrived here. Our challenge now is not only to understand these conversations but also to reconstruct their context and the sentiments of those who once participated in this cybernetic agora: an exercise in digital archaeology. Navigating through the threads of the forum, we’ll try to piece them back together, repairing the broken links, missing images, and references to websites that no longer exist — reminders of the impermanence of the digital realm.

On Sunday 12 November, Hackers & Designers returns to Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ for more sonic dialogue using SoundLAB's extraordinary electro-acoustic instrument collection and sound parasites developed by H&D. This time we will kick-off your Sunday afternoon with a show-and-tell by sound artist and music technologist @arikangorkem We will also share some results from the project Hacked Orchestra we've been working on together with @ghenwa_noire where we developed sound parasite instruments to explore how we can connect and stay together through noise and sonic dialogue. SoundLAB educators will then introduce you to their instrument collection and guide us into a joint collective jam. Do not miss! More info & signup via the link in bio 🌅 Three people sitting on the floor, looking at the person manipulating electronic prototypes with lots of wires. Workshop Alert🍪🍪🍪 Please DM me(Noam) or email hinoamson(at)gmail(dot)com for registration. 18th October 2023, 17.00-20.00 Sandberg Instituut, Fred. Roeskestraat 96, 1076 ED Amsterdam Benthem Crouwel building, 3rd floor, small auditorium Unionizing the Speculative is an informal gathering that invites precarious cultural workers whose value of labor is likely to be challenged under the influence of generative AI. Participants will explore the collective strategy of advocacy through Speculoos biscuits containing AI-generated images. How can creative workers unionize with generative AI? How can we as creative workers be accountable to AI-led automation? How did linotype and personal computers cause the demise of the International Typographical Union (ITU) which used to be one of the most influential unions in the US? What is the role and limitation of speculation as a strategy in this? The workshop will be an immediate response to these urgent questions. Using image generating AI Stable Diffusion, we will generate images that will be engraved on Speculoos cookies whose name shares its origin with the word “speculate.” The cookies will serve as a symbol of the speculative fund raising to teach AI labor ethics. The goal of the workshop will be to collectively speculate how this fund could be used and come up with the strategies of campaign to manifest the voices of creative workers about the influence of generative AI to our labor conditions. The participants are encouraged to bring their computer. No prior knowledge on AI is needed as we will go through the case studies together. Conceptualized by Noam Youngrak Son During @dreamingbeyondai Residency Workshop cohosted by @hackersanddesigners and @platform_bk

H&D is back in Amsterdam with The Hacked Orchestra! We teamed up with artist @ghenwa_noire to explore the radical social potential of active listening in the shape of informal, improvisational sonic dialogue sessions. During two different occasions in Amsterdam we will engage in intuitive forms of communication, listening and interacting with others, through sonic gestures. 🔊 October 7, 2023 ~ 12.00 —18.00 📯 @ NDSM Open Come to our studio during NDSM Open and make sound machines with Hackers & Designers! There are strange sounds hidden in almost everything around us, which one will you discover? With our best found and hacked sounds we parade through the NDSM hall as a band! BONUS: Our studio mates from @the.hmm will run a cool workshop too and are presenting a game they’ve been working on. 🕸 free of charge and all ages are welcome. Feel free to show up any time from 12.00 to 18.00. 🔊 October 13, 2023 ~ 10:00 – 18:30 📯 @ Muziekgebouw aan 't Ij co-curated by @sonicacts Are you a (self-taught, aspiring or even professional) musician, performer, producer, great listener, vocalist, coder, circuit-bender or hardware hacker? Or are you just generally interested experimental sounds?
