Night on the town 💃🏽🕺🏽 Celebrating the work of two amazing artists: Karla Diaz and John Valadez ✨👏🏽🎨💥 Both exhibitions are in view through June 8, 2024 @luisdejesuslosangeles • • • “Karla Diaz: Mujer Valiente y Los Diablitos” invites you to the artist's fantasy world of her alter ego, Mujer Valiente, the lead singer of the band, Los Diablitos, and their tour through various beloved locations in East LA, from Mariachi Plaza to Whittier Boulevard. The exhibition elaborates on the storytelling of the corrido, where the artist has flipped its traditional tropes to empower women. Diaz's reinterpretation not only flips the gender roles but also brings new content to a genre that, in its contemporary moment, has had controversy and even legal ramifications for songs promoting illegal activities, narcotics, misogyny, violence against women, and femicide. Her artistic agency is a powerful testament to the strength and resilience of women, inspiring us all to challenge societal norms and reclaim our narratives. @karladiaz76 “John Valadez: Chaos Anime” presents new paintings that address the shifting global dynamics and social climates facing new generations of Chicanos today, alongside recent works that revisit earlier themes. Together, the works exhibit the breadth of the artist’s social commentaries and further contextualize his lauded approach to painting. Drawing from current events, cultural histories, city life, and such experiences filtered through lucid dreaming, Valadez implements realism, mannerism, abstraction, and montage as a vehicle for allegory and satire to ignite a myriad of socio-political conversations. The works in Chaos Anime mark an exciting moment in Valadez’s career. Radical and indefatigable, Valadez’s allegories, cutting satire, masterful color, and playful yet dead-panned pastiche bring a refreshed sensibility of endurance despite the capriciousness of time. @johnvaladezart #contemporaryart #chicanoart #latinxart #karladiaz #johnvaladez #losangeles #artsdistrict #openingreception

Join us for this Thursday at East LA College! 🍃🌾✊🏽 Recognizing Agency in All Living Things: A Discussion of “Braiding Sweetgrass” and the Technologies of Tackling Climate Change April 25, 2024 12:10 - 1:30 pm • G7-102 Featuring Heidi Lucero (Acjachemen) and Walter Ahhaitty (Kiowa/Comanche/Cherokee) Moderated by Chrissy Sepulveda, Anthropology faculty and my amazing co-instructor for our PST Art and Science class and travel program with artist Carolina Caycedo. Here’s a blurb from our syllabus below: “We Place Life at the Center” is spring course and travel program that explores the impacts of art and human agency with respect to social and environmental justice issues. Through a seminar-style course with group activities, guest speakers, and international travel, we will learn about the intersections of art, science, and environmental justice from the perspective of several communities across the Americas. Key course topics include: Contemporary art and activism; Climate change and its solutions; Indigenous knowledge, science, and technologies; and U.S. and Latin American critical theories and environmental justice movements. Braiding Sweetgrass has been one of our core textbooks in class. What a dream it has been to spend each week of the semester learning Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants 🍃 🌾 🌱

Final week of Kang Seung Lee: The Heart of A Hand, our exhibition that pays tribute to Goh Choo San (1948–1987), a pioneering Singaporean-born Chinese choreographer who died of an AIDS-related illness at age 39. The exhibition presents new artworks created by Kang Seung Lee through extensive archival research, interviews, and collaborations, including drawing, sculptural installation, and a newly-commissioned video. If you are in the area, please visit this wonderfully queer and touching exhibition that reflects on queer life/loss, kinship, community, memory, futurity, and a rewriting of the historical record. The exhibition is on view through Saturday, July 22, 2023. Free and open to all! 1301 Avenida Cesar Chavez Monterey Park, California #VPAM @vpam_arts @kangseunglee Photography by Paul Salveson

Special visit with the one and only Karla Diaz @karladiaz76 ✨ 😇 We talked about life, her upcoming projects, and toured the @kangseunglee exhibition that I co-organized. I will always remember our special conversation about historical memory, collective witnessing, and talking in codes (ancient and contemporary!) 🔐🤐 We also got to visit with my fab colleague Nathalie Sanchez @nathaliesanchezart in the new Learning Lab on campus. Love being part of this amazing community ♥️ Swipe all the way through to see Karla’s gold shoes matching Kang’s newest video w/ @joshudoser @n8thankim 🏅👡🩰⭐️

Librería Donceles, a socially engaged art project by artist and educator Pablo Helguera @helguerapablo closes this Saturday @vpam_arts ✨ Check it out if you can! The exhibition emerged out of a desire to address the lack of bookstores that serve the growing Latinx communities in the United States. Part functioning bookstore and part participatory installation, Librería Donceles provides space for the community to engage with Spanish-language-specific books and multilingual programming designed to encourage cultural understanding, tolerance, and social activism. Taking its name from the historic street, Calle Donceles, in Mexico City that is lined with used bookstores, the installation premiered in New York in 2013 and has since traveled to Phoenix, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Boston, Indianapolis, Anchorage and Santa Cruz. In each of these cities, it has been the sole Spanish-language bookstore. After nearly a decade of traveling, Librería Donceles has arrived in Los Angeles, home to one of the largest Spanish-speaking populations in the country, to celebrate and build upon its numerous years of community engagement and impact. #VPAM #PabloHelguera #LibreriaDonceles #contemporaryart #spanishbooks #community 📸 by Monica Orozco @demonicaphoto @monicaorozcophotography
