ESTATE HUGUETTE CALAND • Mennour is honored to announce an unprecedented collaboration with the estate of artist Huguette Caland (1931-2019). A painter, draughtswoman, engraver and sculptor, Caland is one of the great figures of Lebanese modernism. Pursuing an international career, she has lived and worked in Beirut, Paris and Los Angeles. On the occasion of Art Basel, Mennour is revealing historic works by this unclassifiable artist, a pioneer in her poetic and political exploration of the female body and desire. In November 2024, the gallery will devote an exhibition and publication to the particularly productive years Huguette Caland spent in Paris between 1970 and 1987. Huguette Caland has recently been the subject of retrospectives at the Tate St Ives (UK), the Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha (QA), the Drawing Center, New York (US) and WIELS, Brussels (BE). The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (US) currently devotes an exhibition to her work. She is also exhibited at the 60th Venice Biennale and at the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris. In 2025, a major museum retrospective will be dedicated to her. “Art is not a part of my life; it is my whole life. I’ve never analysed my creative intention. I know only that I want to determine a point of emotion in the painting or drawing, and that I am absorbed by an exploration of the sensual possibilities of the human body”. — Huguette Caland — Portrait: Huguette Caland wearing her kaftan she designed for Pierre Cardin. #huguettecaland #estateofhuguettecaland

@Cultured_Mag named “Huguette Caland: Outside the Line” on their 9 Must-See Exhibitions list this week ⚡️The exhibition is the first solo exhibition of the works of the Lebanese artist (1931–2019) in a US museum. The “Bribes de corps” series established Caland as a key figure in the broader discourse of Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting. This series reflects Caland’s deep investment in the visibility and celebration of the female form, while also expressing keen awareness of the ways in which the body is subjected to political and violent forces. “Huguette Caland: Outside the Line” is curated by @Donna_Honarpisheh , @KnightFdn Associate Curator of Art and Research. In 1987, Lebanese artist Hugette Caland (1931–2019) wrote, “I’ve never analyzed my creative intention. I know only that I want to determine a point of emotion in the painting or drawing, and that I am absorbed by an exploration of the sensual possibilities of the human body.” “Huguette Caland: Outside the Line (1970–84)” is the artist’s first solo exhibition in an American museum and is on view in ICA Miami’s ground floor galleries until October 6, 2024. The exhibition brings together paintings from Caland’s “Bribes de corps” series, and reflects the artist’s preoccupation with the body and formal experimentation in drawing and abstract painting. Caland often used her own body as a point of departure; these works focus on the body as craft and caricature, expressing its subtle forms through humor, sexual expression, and formal invention. ICA Miami presents “Huguette Caland: Outside the Line (1970–84),” the first solo exhibition of work by the Lebanese artist in an American museum. A provocative figure in abstract art, Caland (1931–2019) has only recently been recognized for her figurative and abstract paintings that render the body in subtle lines and bursts of color that are simultaneously intimate, erotic, and bold. The exhibition brings together paintings from the artist’s series “Bribes de corps” (Body Parts, 1973–76) and associated works, reflecting her preoccupation with the body and formal experimentation in drawing and abstract painting. The works also take on an autobiographical undercurrent. Transforming the body’s curves and orifices into abstractions that double as landscapes or nonhuman shapes, Caland subverted idealized portrayals of the female form and challenged viewers’ interpretive methods. “Huguette Caland: Outside the Line (1970–84)” is curated by @Donna_Honarpisheh , Associate Curator. The 16th Lyon Biennale of Contemporary Art ~ “Manifesto of Fragility” on view September 14-31 December 2022. . Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath, curators of the 16th Lyon Biennale, elaborate: “The Biennale’s title Manifesto of Fragility captures a current sentiment that is universally shared, whether it stems from the endangered conditions of the environment, the losses felt through wars, the hardships brought upon by illness and pandemics, or through the perilous conditions of our society’s marginalized members. Fragility is also formally and conceptually at the heart of artistic creation and is the thread connecting all exhibitions and participating artists. As a gathering of all participants, creators, and visitors alike, the Biennale aims for a collective Manifesto that positions fragility as a generative form of resistance, which allows us to reimagine our future”. .
