We’re so honored to have Brother Qadir join us for our recent youth group session, sharing invaluable lessons on the Community Resilience Model. Our youth are learning firsthand what it takes to navigate life’s challenges with grace and strength. Together, we’re fostering a community where bouncing back, staying grounded, and embracing strong emotions are not just lessons but pillars of our growth. Every Thursday, we’re building resilience, one session at a time. #YouthEmpowerment #CommunityResilienceMonitor

What you’re hearing is the automated reminder that plays every couple of minutes during a phone call with a current inmate. Also, what you’re not seeing is the timed limits of the phone call and our founder Meetra furiously redialing every 15 minutes to allow Kenneth to be present for as much as possible. In spite of the automated message or automated hang ups that interrupted him every 15 minutes during our panel at the Wende Museum, Kenneth was able to deliver a powerful message about art and how it’s made a difference while he’s in prison. How art has allowed him to feel liberation to make the choice to stay within the narrative of his past or allow himself to choose who is he in the present. How art has allowed him to feel as if he’s not incarcerated in the most intimate parts of his being. This panel and this phone call with Kenneth gave our audience a glimpse at one of the few ways in which incarcerated folks experience connection, empowerment, and life. #HumaHouse

🌱 Growing more than just microgreens, we’re cultivating opportunities and nourishing communities. @richardsongenea teaches our youth how to tend to their plants and to their spirits as well. There’s a food desert in South Central LA, meaning nourishing, affordable food is inaccessible to most. At the end of this session, our youth will sell their microgreens to Ora Cafe in Leimert Park to bring fresh, homegrown goodness to the table. 🌿✨ #GrowingTogether #CommunityFirst #HumaHouse

From bars to brushstrokes: Art’s power transcends boundaries and brings compassion to those incarcerated. Last week, Huma House co-founder Meetra Johansen and artist Kenneth Webb @kennethwebb1968 participated in a panel at the Wende Museum in Culver City. Kenneth, amongst the other formerly incarcerated artists in the panel, @cbranscombe11 , shared his experiences, his feelings, and his art with us. They all spoke about how having access to art made them feel human and cared for. Thanks to the folks who worked to make sure Kenneth could join us via telephone. And many thanks to all the folks that showed up. Kenneth’s work is on display at the Wende, make sure to check it out! #ArtHeals #BreakingBarriers #HumaHouse

mirror neuron (noun) [MIR-or NOO-ron] : Specialized brain cells that activate upon observing similar actions, fostering social learning. Also known as “role-modeling” or “leading by example.” Tobias, Genea, and Qadir embody exemplary leadership as empowered, successful brothers and sisters amidst systematic erasure and oppression. At Huma, a big part of our mission involves building networks of mentors and community. Our goal is to lay the foundation and guide our youths’ paths to liberation and personal empowerment. ✊🦚

Genea is one of our leaders who is guiding our newest youth class on gardening and how to grow our own micro greens at home! 🥬 ✨ These next few weeks, we will be tending to the life of a seed and applying the lessons of how to care for our seeds to our own lives. Ultimately, we hope to address generational trauma and how to foster resilience. #HumaHouse #gardening #resilience
