hi hello this is a post about doing stuntwork in opera
the days of standing still and singing are likely a thing of the past — in order to make this scene work (in which my character is losing her grip on reality) in ᴛʜᴇ ᴇxᴛᴇʀᴍɪɴᴛɪɴɢ ᴀɴɢᴇʟ, i had to come up with some extreme fight choreography — thanks to my dear colleagues @jarrettott@nickythespence for rehearsing this with me over and over to make sure no one got hurt and for also co-choreographing it —
i am not a trained stunt coordinator and we didn’t have one in the room with us so it took me a while to figure out how to do this cross after singing a boatload of high notes, with high-level negative emotions as an actor, and without hurting myself (or others more importantly) !!!
if you are reading this and are a singer, do not be afraid to try extreme stunt work, especially if there is a fight coordinator in the room — go slow and check what your colleagues’ boundaries are — but find the truth of the scene and give over to it — go slow and do not underestimate the power of trusting your colleagues and teching the movements when it comes to extreme physical work

real talk this scene in act 1 was the hardest moment for me vocally ok — you gotta count and sing above the staff at the same time and I learned that this is a skill I need to keep working on — DOES ANY1 ELSE STRUGGLE WITH THIS ??? and does any1 have tips ????

here’s a short clip of this week’s english text premiere of ʜᴀɴs ᴀʙʀᴀʜᴀᴍsᴇɴ's ᴛᴡᴏ ɪɴɢᴇʀ ᴄʜʀɪsᴛɪᴇɴsᴇɴ sᴏɴɢs with @festivalaix . these two songs are about the dialectic between the infinite world of nature juxtaposed against the finite life of humans, and ʜᴀɴs’s extremely mathematical approach to form complements this theme in the text.
the composer asked for specific colors, and straight tone (or, without vibrato) high notes was one of his requests. this was new for me vocally, so this performance is slightly scary to post — a few high Bs and Cs in this piece that needed to be treated with great delicacy. but, in the same way that i enjoy content that shows a more honest portrait of life (including the new, unfamiliar, and unfinished bits of it), it’s nice to share the same parts of my life.

if there’s one thing I can’t stop thinking about, it’s #nicolechevalier’s work in general, but especially this clip of her singing Elettra’s final aria from ɪᴅᴏᴍᴇɴᴇᴏ at @salzburgerfestspiele in 2019 — I highly recommend watching the entire video (available on YouTube) as it is a masterclass in incredible acting and unbelievably masterful singing —
yes opera can be boring but so can everything — but ALSO opera can be THIS !!

storytime — someone once made a CD for me of recordings by natalie dessay and this aria was on it — I listened to it over and over and over — now I am singing it this summer at @festivalaix — that was almost twenty years ago 🙃
