🐵🗓️ Can you believe World Chimpanzee Day is just two weeks away?? 🌳🔍 Each year on July 14, we celebrate our closest living relatives in the animal kingdom! Why July 14? Because on that day 64 years ago, Jane first stepped into what is now known as Gombe, Tanzania, to begin her research into wild chimpanzee behavior. She had no way of knowing that her insights into chimpanzees would not only change how we view them, but also how we view ourselves. 🥳👏 In honor of this anniversary, the Jane Goodall Institute came together with a group of NGOs, including @napsaprimates , @liberiachimpanzeerescueprotection , and @lincolnparkzoo , to found #WorldChimpanzeeDay . And we'll be celebrating our sixth annual party for chimps all month long! Join us by sharing your favorite chimpanzee fact in the comments below to help us kick off the celebration. 🌟💚 Wow, what a birthday! Thank you all for the outpouring of warm wishes for Jane yesterday as she celebrated this milestone year. Let’s keep this momentum going strong because as Jane says, she’s not slowing down at 90 — she’s gearing up to spread her message of hope even further. Here’s to many more years of curiosity, inspiration, and compassion for our planet and all who call it home! 📷 and 🎨 Brilliant Earth Photographer, MUTTS/Patrick McDonnell, Luke Stambouliah, Jen Turpin, Joanna Vesty, Jeremy Collins

While we all love a photo that shows a glimpse into the lives of incredible species like chimpanzees, it's important to be mindful of the content we engage with. That's why every time we post an archival photo or a picture from a sanctuary that shows people and wildlife in close proximity to each other, we include our disclaimer: *The Jane Goodall Institute does not endorse handling or close proximity to wildlife.* Giving wildlife space keeps everyone safe. So before hitting that like or share button, take a moment to ensure the content aligns with ethical standards. Here's what to watch out for: 🚫 Videos and photos from unaccredited captive facilities seeking attention or profit 🚫 Chimpanzees being coerced into unnatural behaviors or dressed up for entertainment 🚫 Close contact between chimpanzees and non-expert humans Swipe through to discover and appreciate examples of appropriate content: 🐵 Chimpanzees thriving in their natural habitat 🍃 Living freely at an accredited sanctuary, or 💚 Being cared for by trained professionals Let's celebrate these remarkable animals responsibly! 🌿📸 📸 Image 1: Fernando Turmo 📸 Image 2: Stephano Lihedule 📸 Image 3: Fernando Turmo Alt Text: Image 1: A young chimpanzee holding a stick on the forest floor at Tchimpounga. 🌟 Meet a Chimpanzee Champion: Chantal 🌟 With World Chimpanzee Day fast approaching on July 14, join us in celebrating Chantal, one of our many dedicated caretakers at JGI's Tchimpounga sanctuary. Chantal plays a crucial role in the daily lives of our chimpanzees. For the past 25 years, she has been the gentle guardian for the most timid new arrivals at our sanctuary. Chantal shares, “When the babies first arrive, I stay with them through the night because they need comfort and love. I ensure they are healthy and communicate any concerns to the veterinary team for necessary treatment and follow-up.” For example, when a baby named George arrived, he was deeply traumatized after bring separated from his mother by poachers. Chantal stayed by his side, soothing him whenever he awoke in distress, providing a constant source of comfort and security. As George’s adoptive parent, she not only monitors his health but also teaches him essential chimp skills, like exchanging pant-hoots and creating a safe and nurturing environment. Let’s give a big shout-out to Chantal for her outstanding work! 🐵💚 You can support the work of Chantal and our team of passionate caretakers by becoming or gifting a Chimp Guardian today. Chantal is chaperoning the snack time of three infant chimpanzees. We see a variety of cut up fruits being enjoyed by each of the chimpanzees. Chantal who has a gentle smile and braided hair cradles two chimpanzees, one in each arm, both looking alert and comfortable. Chantal holds a young chimpanzee on her lap. Chantal is playfully sticking out her tongue, sharing a lighthearted and funny moment with the infant chimpanzee looking up at her with its mouth open in wonderment.

🌿✨ Gombe, Tanzania is a magical and biodiverse place — it's where Dr. Jane Goodall first began studying chimpanzees, and where JGI's long-running wild chimpanzee research continues to this day! Dive into the recent article, "Research and Conservation in the Greater Gombe Ecosystem: Challenges and Opportunities," featuring contributions from the dedicated JGI staff. This insightful piece highlights two major threats to Gombe's chimpanzees: infectious diseases and deforestation. Thanks to JGI's Gombe One Health Hub Eco-health monitoring program, our understanding of infectious disease in chimpanzee and wildlife communities has greatly expanded. For decades, JGI has proactively tracked and studied zoonotic diseases in Gombe to prevent future pandemics, employing community-led approaches. These efforts also address deforestation, promoting land-use planning, forest monitoring, and sustainable livelihoods like agroforestry. The impact is profound, enhancing the well-being of people, wildlife, and ecosystems. 🌍🐒 #Conservation #OneHealth #JGI #JaneGoodall #GombeNationalPark Want to know more and find ways to get involved? Lately, tensions are high between Tchimpounga's ruling chimpanzees. 👀🐵   Chimpanzees have complex social structures, which include many layers of interrelation by blood and friendship, and separate but connected hierarchies for males and females. Through our work at JGI's Tchimpounga Sanctuary in the Republic of the Congo, we gain unique insight into the dynamics at play.   Kefan has long been the calm leader of Tchindzoulou Island, a safe haven for rehabilitated chimpanzees. But recently, his power has been tested.   As Kefan has gotten older, he made the choice to partner with male chimpanzee Tchibanga. The two are now starting to face some competition from other males. If this wasn’t enough, Kefan recently spent a few weeks separate from the group with another female named Low Low — a very unusual behavior for him.   Kefan has faced challenges like these previously, so we have hope he will overcome them as before. We'll keep you posted with any updates 🍵 📸 credits: JGI/Fernando Turmo . . . . . #Tchimpounga #ChimpanzeeHierarchy #ChimpanzeeSocialStructure #PrimateBehavior #JaneGoodall #JaneGoodallInstitute #Chimpanzees #Conservation #Nonprofit #ChimpanzeeConservation #Interconnected #CommunityLedConservation #CommunityConservation #Wildlife #AfricanWildlife #Tacare
