Together with fifty amazing artists this year, I was named a 2024 @unitedstatesartists Fellow! I can’t begin to tell you how honored I am except to say THANK YOU to family, teachers, friends, and mentors who have walked with me through the years. An award like this doesn’t happen without a community of love and support. From the press release: USA Fellows are selected based on their groundbreaking artistic visions, unique perspectives within their fields, and evident potential for the award to make a significant impact in their practices and lives…This year's 50 awardees, a group of artists and collectives spanning 10 disciplines, are inspired by a wide variety of approaches and experiences, each engaging us in a collective responsibility to imagine and invest in our future. My favorite line from the press release about the awardees: “…honoring their rich contributions to the cultural fabric of the country.” I only wish my grandparents could have heard this. I'm so grateful my parents, aunts, and uncles will. This award is for you and the fabric you wove that I now get to weave into. Last week to support Ruth’s Table and SCRAP! Show closes Thursday! I’m lucky enough to be part of an incredible group of like 20 artists in this show who are all donating work to benefit these organizations! Viewing room linked below. Closing party (free!) on Nov. 30th from 5:30-7:30pm Ruth’s Table 3160 21st Street San Francisco, CA 94110 (Between Mission and Capp) /viewing-room/21-intertwined-a-collaborative-exhibition-between-scrap-ruth-s/ Ruth's Table is of course named for Ruth Asawa (it's her table where all the magic of this place happens). And as loose associations go, I got to see the Ruth Asawa exhibit at the Whitney this past week. It’s incredible to see the way Asawa transformed pattern across 2D and 3D media (my fave: Untitled: center tied, six-branched form, galvanized wire, 1963). Thanks to @sfurbanwanderer and @ruthstablesf for these pics!

Desert dust murmurations, Desert dust collaborations, A summoning of kin and ancestral spirits in the dustways between San Angelo, Texas and Chihuahua, Mexico Flying with deserts that raised me; flying with dust that raises them In the land of flying misssnakes, I stole Lupe’s string bikini 2023 Linen, nylon, and bioplastics; stretcher bars, clips, and bells 159” x 216” x 8” (dimensions variable) Image credit: Sarah Vasquez From the press release: Ballroom Marfa presents unFlagging: Futures. This year-long, outdoor exhibition features a series of commissioned flags from four artists displayed in Ballroom’s facade. Each artist examines the flag as a symbol of liberty, power, and identity through an eco-feminist lens. With their flag, In the land of flying misssnakes, I stole Lupe’s string bikini, artist Kira Dominguez Hultgren reckons with environmental devastation and the impact of the fast fashion industry on the environment. Weaving natural and artificial materials together on the loom, Dominguez Hultgren’s piece mimics a bird about to take flight. With this work she asks, can we coexist peacefully, and respectfully with the natural world? The artist considers this flag “a collaboration with the Marfa desert, using materials that are not made to withstand or work against the desert, but remain open to however the desert wants to respond to this flag-staking.” Our future is in the hands of this present moment. Dominguez Hultgren reminds us of the need to coexist with all the elements. Kira Dominguez Hultgren’s flag is on view at Ballroom Marfa from September 25, 2023–January 4, 2024. /program/unflagging/ Thank you to @alexann.susholtz and @ballroommarfa for this amazing opportunity and exhibition!! #flags #ballroommarfa #marfa #textilesculpture #desertdust

I’ve been spending the summer at the Basque BioDesign Center in the misty mountains of Bilbao, Spain, getting lost in weave structures, idiomas, and cultural composites. Images and text reposted from @basquebiodesigncenter . Thanks Maria!

------- 🌿💡Kira Dominguez wins Bilbe | Digital Loom residency grant.
@kiradominguezhultgren is an artist, weaver and teacher based in the United States. She tells us that she has come to the Basque BioDesign Center to experiment with weaving biomaterials on the digital jacquard loom. During the residency, she is researching the types of yarns that can be created from kombucha cultures, algae, wood cellulose gum composites and Latxa sheep wool by-products.

Dominguez Hultgren wants to connect this new project to what she has been doing for a long time in her work: "thinking about cultural composites and by-products, how do cultures coexist, what happens between generations when cultures work together and refuse to adapt to different environments? I hope that this summer the pieces I am weaving will connect a conversation both socially and environmentally to think about alternative forms of belonging and togetherness".

There was no way I was making a calla lily vulva in 2022 without both pinning it to the wall and offering it some protection. Kevlar lines the inside of this piece, shredded in the weaving process, torn on the loom by the mohair and silk in the warp. It was an impulsive decision made in the whiplash of the U.S. Supreme Court decisions. To Carry Every Name but Your Own 92” x 59”x 38” (dimensions variable) Handspun ropes in sisal, silk, bullet-proof and stab-proof Kevlar; warped in wool, acrylic, cotton, linen, silk; loom bars; zip ties 2022 While Mrinalini Mukherjee’s fiber sculptures and deities from the 1970s-90s are influencing the folds and droops in this piece, and Punjabi phulkari and Mexican serape blankets are influencing the color choices, I was particularly interested in seeing the ways my own weaving practice is born out of a history of U.S. contemporary fiber arts and feminist Chicana writing.
