What an incredible weekend! This past weekend we hosted the 2023 International Flameworking Conference at @scc.glass.center ! It was an incredible event and I am so grateful to all on our team at the college and the glass center - staff, faculty, students, and alumni - who helped put all this together, to all the presenters, sponsors, and to each and every attendee who came out! Thank you all for the excellent weekend! If you’d like to see more of the event. Check out my posts on @scc.glass.center . I’ll be adding more over the next several days. I’m feeling simultaneously exhausted and extremely energized today! I hope everyone had a safe trip home. I look forward to seeing you all next year! #IFC2023 #flameworking #glasscommunity #glassinspiration #flameworkedglass #glasslife #lampworking

Don’t miss Madeline Rile Smith, @madhotglass , TONIGHT, Friday, December 2nd, 7:30pm at The Delaware Contemporary in Wilmington, DE! In conjunction with the exhibition, “Through A Glass, Darkly”, exhibiting artist Madeline Rile Smith will be demonstrating some of her handmade musical glass instruments including horns, trumpets, flutes, and percussion! While at The DE Contemporary, be sure to check out the rest of the incredible work on display in the museum-wide exhibition, “Through A Glass, Darkly” curated by Kristin Deady, Jenna Lucente, and Alexander Rosenberg. The exhibition includes new and recent works by artists working with glass and glass-related materials and processes, exposing the material’s dual nature. Selected works engage the historical promise and power of the material to reveal and to bring clarity, while challenging viewers to acknowledge an inherent interconnectedness between enhancement and distortion. Madeline Rile Smith uses glass as a performative vehicle to consider notions of intimacy, compromise, and embodiment. Informed by her background in music, she creates objects and videos that explore connection and isolation. Madeline’s work has been exhibited in venues throughout the US and internationally, including the Museum of Arts and Design, Czong Institute for Contemporary Art, the Toyama Glass Art Museum, and in New Glass Review 41 and 35. She earned an MFA in glass at Rochester Institute of Technology, and a BFA in glass from Tyler School of Art. A passionate educator, she has instructed glassworking in schools and institutions throughout the East Coast, including Rochester Institute of Technology, UrbanGlass, The Crefeld School, Salem Community College, and Tyler School of Art. Madeline is joining Salem Community College in 2023 as an Assistant Professor in Glass Art. She is a recipient of a commission award for Glass Meet the Future 2021 with North Lands Creative. You can see more of her work at madelinerilesmith.com or @madhotglass . @jenna_lucente @rosenbergalexander @kristindeady @decontemporary @salemcommunitycollege #flameworking #borosilicate #contemporaryglass #glassofinstagram #bestofglass #glasssculpture #glass

“Through A Glass, Darkly” Curated by Kristin Deady, Jenna Lucente, and Alexander Rosenberg September 9 - December 31, 2022 OPENING EVENT: Friday, September 9, 5 - 9 PM Through a Glass, Darkly includes new and recent works by artists working with glass and glass-related materials and processes, exposing the material’s dual nature. Spanning across six galleries, selected works will engage the historical promise and power of the material to reveal and to bring clarity, while challenging viewers to acknowledge an inherent interconnectedness between enhancement and distortion. To see “through a glass” — or mirror — “darkly” is to have an obscure or imperfect vision of reality. The expression comes from the writings of the Apostle Paul; he explains that we do not now see clearly, but at the end of time, we will do so. Historically, glass has augmented human perception, allowing us to view parts of the world that are otherwise elusive to our limited natural senses. While revealing the minuscule and distant, preserving the fleeting, and encapsulating the fragile and reactive, glass also obscures our perception of the very things it helps us to observe. The nature of the material is two-sided; it both enhances and subverts vision. Glass is an instrument for enlightenment, and at the same time, it is a driver of misinformation. Anchor Artists: David King, Helen Lee, Kristin Neville Taylor, and Bohyun Yoon have been curated into the exhibition as featured artists, and have several works included in the show. We are also pleased to include incredible works by Rebecca Arday, Sarah Blood, Sarah Briland, Kayla Cantu, Kate Clements, Caroline Cox, Daniel Cutrone, Davin Ebanks, Christy Georg, Kim Harty, Brynn Hurlstone, Matthew Jacob, Jessica Julius, Christopher Kerr-Ayer, Sharon Koelblinger, Ying Chiun Lee, Amy Lemaire, Matt Meyer, Lukas Milanak, Dan Mirer, Anthony Monahon, Paige Morris, Kaitlin Pomerantz, Madeline Smith, Aric Snee, Carolyn Spears, Justin Spillers, Christie Stidham, Heather Sutherland, Kimberly Thomas, Abegael Uffelman, and Zac Weinberg. @decontemporary @jenna_lucente @rosenbergalexander #silica #glass #wilmingtonde #wilmingtondelaware #contemporaryglass
