We, the Artes Mundi 10 shortlisted artists, have come together from different regions and realities that deal daily with renewed forms of colonialism and oppression. Our diverse voices have in common a need to tell and to create worlds that oppose the ongoing legacies of imperialism, racism, extraction and the militarization of the planet. For 75 years, the Israeli government has illegally occupied Palestinian land and ethnically cleansed its communities. We call for an immediate end to the massacre, before the humanity we believe in is turned into rubble. We call for a ceasefire and for joint efforts for peace. Violence against innocent civilians is a ruthless crime that cannot be justified - wherever and whenever it takes place. On #WorldEnvironmentDay , we wanted to celebrate the fusion of art and environmental awareness embodied in Carolina Caycedo's ‘Esto No Es Agua/This Is Not Water’ 💧 Through this evocative piece, Caycedo explores her deep connection with water and its representation through the Las Damas waterfall in Southern Colombia. By manipulating videos and sounds, she emphasizes water's active role in the world’s geopolitical and environmental conflicts, how ecocide and genocide go hand in hand, urging viewers to reconsider their relationship with the environment. We set out from the urgency of regenerating the agreement we have with the aquifer, of coming together with water within a space of community and convergence, of diversity of thought and collectivity.  Sowing Moisture arises from a collaboration between Ruta del Castor, Carolina Caycedo, organizations, educational institutions, community members of Xochimilco, artists, activists, farmers and students in order to collectively reflect upon the relationship that we have with water as a binding body that weaves cultures and ecosystems. Descubre “Patrón mono” de la artista Carolina Caycedo en la exposición “La buena vida”. Esta es una videoinstalación que se sumerge en el cañón del río Cauca, en Antioquia, para plasmar visualmente los efectos sociales y medioambientales del proyecto Hidroituango. Con esta obra Caycedo destaca la conexión entre las comunidades ribereñas con el “Patrón mono”, nombre que otorgan al río Cauca. Para ellos, el río es un patrón generoso que brinda sin restricciones, reflejando una relación profunda entre la naturaleza y quienes dependen de ella. La videoinstalación fusiona imágenes del cañón, grabaciones del cauce del río, y composiciones visuales en fractales, creando un sol líquido que revela las complejas interacciones entre entidades humanas y no humanas en este territorio. I’ve been blessed to witness the 2023 Salmon Prayer-Run along the Klamath River in its 20th year, and to visit for the 1st time these rivers, mountains, and forests. The dam removal of four of the dams that choke the Klamath waters has started, and we hope to see them completely dismantled by 2025. We hope to see Salmon return to their homes in the headwaters. Such is the result of the intergenerational political, environmental, cultural, and spiritual resistance of the Yurok, Hoopa, Karuk, Klamath, Modoc, Yahooskin-Paiute and Pit River-People, from elders to newborns to elders to newborns to elders to newborns… Such a reference for us who wanna see ALL dams go down, rivers heal and fish thrive!
