Probably (definitely?) the only artwork that still makes me cry, even after 20 years (improbable!!) of knowing it. I first saw Yoko Ono’s Cut Piece (1964) in a college English class (s/o @liz_gerber ), and we focused on its formal qualities....so I was so excited to see it presented almost at scale with so, so much social, cultural, political, and aesthetic context in Out of Bounds, curated by Midori Yoshimoto and Tiffany Lambert @japansociety ⚡️What a treat to spend so much time with Ono as well as Shigeko Kubuta, Takako Saito, and Mieko Shiomi! STUFFED is the third independent curatorial collaboration between friends and colleagues Mallory A. Ruymann and Leah Triplett Harrington. Their partnership is grounded in an interest in global contemporary artists working with materials associated with craft. They seek to generate scholarly exhibitions that simultaneously uplift the artists they present, expanding critical dialogue on under-represented practices in art history.

This exhibition examines the volumes that swell, and the possibilities presented within those distensions. Offering, beguiling, and encouraging new ways for art to exist in space, STUFFED makes room for softness to stretch beyond neutral material.
