“These are the first color photographs I have made. With the help of my prism, I created rainbows in the room and shot them every morning. I entered into this zone of light and shadow, while recreating the feeling of shock and surprise that Newton must have felt. This light had no shape or form. In a certain sense, it was pure. These were gradations of light that emerged out of the darkness and began to shift. Nothing is in focus, so there is this feeling of ecstasy or rapture.” – #HiroshiSugimoto discusses his Opticks series of photographs, on view at Lisson Gallery New York as part of his solo exhibition ‘Optical Allusion’, continuing through 3 August. Our US galleries will be closed from 4pm this Wednesday, 3 July for the 4 July holiday, reopening on Monday 8 in New York, and Tuesday 9 in Los Angeles. Plan your visits to our current shows by Hiroshi Sugimoto, Hugh Hayden and Sarah Cunningham at the link in our bio. #HiroshiSugimoto #LissonGallery #LissonNewYork

Now online: Jack Pierson (@jackpierson9 ) walks through his Lisson Gallery solo show, currently on view in London. Pierson’s multi-disciplinary practice challenges conventional hierarchies by commingling mediums equally. A journey through this exhibition invites viewers into a world where intimate and autobiographical narratives interact with those distinctly universal and inclusive. A yellow hue echoes throughout – marking a shift from Pierson’s typical blue, pink and grayscale themes – the centrepiece of this being YELLOW ARRAY (2024). A coalescence of various printed materials, galvanised metal, paper, spray and watercolour paint, this large-scale composition intricately incorporates magazine pages, photographs, drawings, vintage posters and other ephemera, both personal and unfamiliar. Pierson’s meticulous process of addition and rearrangement of diverse components mirrors that of a collector; each material is afforded a prominent presence within the whole. Watch in full at the link in our bio. The show continues through 3 August at 67 Lisson Street. #JackPierson #LissonGallery #LissonLondon

For the latest episode of @theartnewspaper.official ’s ‘A brush with...’ podcast, Otobong Nkanga (@otobongnkanga ) talks to Ben Luke about her influences—from writers to musicians, film-makers and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped her life and work. Nkanga explores the land and the environment in relation to our bodies, and the cultures and histories that mould and define them. Working across sculpture, installation, performance, sound, photography and video, the artist brings together what she calls constellations of images, movements and objects, to poetically interweave ideas relating to cultural history and anthropology, geography and geology. Her first Lisson Gallery solo show, ‘We Come from Fire and Return to Fire’, continues in London through 3 August. Listen now at the link in our bio. Otobong Nkanga, 2023. "In my entire 55 years of my career I was always doing something with energy. I don’t have any other better place than here, right now, to make intervention of the energy itself. We need complete collaboration and I will suggest you what we’re going to do. This is a music festival, you all want to have fun time and, you know, to listen to great music. But which I am proposing is something that never been done in any of the festivals for music entire history. I’m proposing you seven minutes of silence." – #MarinaAbramović participated in this year's @glastofest last Friday with an intervention titled Seven Minutes of Collective Silence. The intervention on the Pyramid Stage was a response to Glastonbury’s 2024 theme of “Peace,” marking a moment of introspection and unity amid the vibrant energy of one of the world’s most celebrated music festivals. #BehindTheScenes of “Dedicated to the Unknown”, Susan Hiller’s exhibition organized by @museohelgadealvear , opening this Friday, June 28, at 8 pm. Curated by Andrew Price, this is the first major solo exhibition of Susan Hiller’s work since her passing in 2019, addressing significant themes of interest for one of the most unique artists of her generation. Selected works explore beliefs in extrasensory perception, dream interpretation traditions, automatic writing practices, and collective experiences of the subconscious, unconscious, and paranormal activity. 🗣️ “I know our culture is in denial about a lot of things. Our hard-wiring as human beings probably prevents us from knowing a great deal about what is real, and each language also sets limits. But every once in a while people experience breakthroughs…” Susan Hiller “Dedicated to the unknown” features works on loan from Lisson Gallery, the Estate of Susan Hiller and the Inelcom Collection, along with a large sound installation belonging to the collection of the Helga de Alvear Museum of Contemporary Art.

Continuing in Beijing, Zhao Gang’s (@zhao___gang ) inaugural Lisson exhibition ‘Carnivore’ presents a new series of paintings that represent the artist’s explorations into the interweaving of psychology, emotions, and lifestyles across history and the present. With his works deeply rooted in a rich and nuanced cultural heritage, drawing inspiration from both classical and contemporary, Western and Chinese influences, Zhao Gang delves into the fluidity of individual identities, clashes of cultures, and the intricate interplay of fragmented historical events. Within his work, patterns and concepts gracefully unfurl, expertly deconstructing visual narratives, with still life remaining a recurring motif. Now open in LA: Sarah Cunningham’s exhibition ‘Flight Paths’ is the artist’s first solo show in Los Angeles, presenting a new body of works that capture her soaring, spontaneous gestures in full flow. Throughout the exhibition, @sarahh_cunningham ’s frenetic and free movement of paint speaks not only to her constant, performative process – employing both time and movement in pursuit of a new formlessness in painting – but also to her material experimentation – removing paint with rags, or holding two brushes in each hand at the same time. 📍On view through 24 August at 1037 N. Sycamore Ave. Plan your visit at the link in our bio. Photography by Dawn Blackman. #SarahCunningham #LissonGallery #LissonLA
