Xican-a.o.x. Body at Pérez Art Museum Miami June 13 to Feb 16 | Pérez Art Museum Miami Opening reception | June 13 | 5 to 11 p.m. Xican-a.o.x. Body is the first major exhibition to showcase work by artists who foreground the body as a site of political agency and imagination, artistic investigation, decolonization, and alternative forms of community. The exhibition emerges at the intersection of experimental artistic practices dating back to the Chicano Movement’s key years in the 1960s and 1970s and embraces the work of artists who identify in myriad ways—including Mexican American, Chicana/o, Xicanx, Indigenous, Latinx, Black, Brown, and Queer. Xican-a.o.x. Body features conceptual, experimental, and pioneering works from the late 1960s to the present using a diverse range of media—from poetry and ceramics to painting, photography, sculpture, film, performance, and drawings—that enlighten our understanding of Xicanx art and culture. Take a closer look at Liz Cohen’s artistic journey and the inspiration behind her stunning work, “Trabantimino,” featured in our newest exhibition, “Xican-a.o.x. Body.”   “Trabantimino” is a brilliant fusion of an East German Trabant and a Chevrolet El Camino, symbolizing the intersection of cultures and identities. This piece challenges perceptions and showcases Liz’s ingenuity and creativity.   Don’t miss the exhibition opening on Thursday, June 13. Dive into a vibrant celebration of culture and creativity with us!   Photo caption: Liz Cohen. “Trabantimino,” 2002–12. Forgotten and overlooked histories fuel the work of March’s artists-in-residence at Fountainhead. As we prepare to say farewell to Ana Silva, Kevork Mourad, and Liz Cohen, we’re taking a closer look at the materials, ideas and processes that make up their work, in a film created by Alexa Caravia. Born during the Cold War in Arizona to immigrant parents, Liz Cohen’s artistic investigations build on her unique family background. Hidden and erased histories, radical self expression, voyeurism and exhibitionism as a form of resistance are ideas she explores through series that often take years to complete. Photographer, performance artist, automotive designer, and ceramicist, the works in Liz’s Fountainhead studio showcase the boundless way she explores geopolitics, economics and gender in her work. On Thursday, March 21, meet Liz and get to know her work at our monthly Open House. Link in bio for the deets. Images by @james_jackman_ Refreshments by @liquiddeath , @dryfarmwines and @estrelladamm
