Prof Richard Scolyer & Prof Georgina Long, the pioneering co-medical directors of the Melanoma Institute Australia have been jointly awarded ‘Australian of the Year 2024’. Difficult to think of more worthy candidates - their research is credited with saving thousands of lives, transforming a diagnosis of advanced melanoma from a death sentence into a curable disease for more than half of those impacted. Last year Richard was diagnosed with incurable brain cancer, spurring Georgina & their team on to develop a world-first series of treatments based on their melanoma research. “Here was an opportunity for us to crack another incurable treatment and make a difference if not for me, then for others.” “From where I stand, with a future now measured in months rather than decades, it is impossible for me to properly articulate how proud and hopeful that this also makes me.” “I say to all Australians, no matter what life throws at you, seek out opportunities to contribute, to participate and to action change,” Prof Richard Scolyer. Alla & her children were reunited last week with their husband & father Alex Storozhuk, the first time in almost two years. Tears & hugs flowed, it was a heart-warming & highly emotional scene as he walked through the gates at Sydney Airport. They’ll spend a few short weeks together before Alex returns to Ukraine. Alex was separated from his family as they crossed over the Polish-Ukrainian border in Feb 2022, as the Russia-Ukraine war began. Since, Alla & her children have taken refuge in Australia. From meeting them a year ago & in a time that Alla describes as the most challenging of her life, they’ve worked incredibly hard to settle into a new way of life - learning English & to swim, attending school, passing driving tests & forming a business. “The main problem that I, my relatives and friends face is the constant pressure of war.
