YOU YOU
YOU YOU is a research exploring the notion of unison, taking the zalghouta (also known as zaghrouta or youyou) as source material. This sound, produced by rapid tongue and uvula movements, is performed solely by women on occasions of communal events. It takes its full amplitude by the repetition and the echoes of multiple voices overlapping, creating a chant for celebration, surprise or grief.
In this short, voices of women from all age and from across the MENA region can be heard (Algeria, Syria, Egypt, Lebanon, Tunisia, Marocco), presenting the variety of zagharits through portraits of Arab and Maghrebi women.
