Malta’s Film Commissioner Johann Grech attempted to show off his acting chops alongside English comedian and actor David Walliams for a promo of the Mediterrane Film Festival.
The short film, which was displayed at the festival, features Grech handing out a trophy to Walliams and telling him to be careful with it. Walliams ends up in a wormhole, travels back in time to the days of the Knights of St John, loses the trophy, and embarks on a quest to retrieve it.
The festival itself has been criticised by the Malta Producers’ Association (MPA) and Malta Entertainment Industry and Arts Association (MEIA) for overlooking the grassroots realities and problems of people working in the film industry.
They urged the government to fulfil key promises – including a strategy for the local film industry, a higher budget for the national film fund, and an update to the cash rebate guidelines to ensure money spent by foreign productions are channelled into the local economy and boost the local filmmaking community.
However, the Malta Film Commission said the ultimate point of the Mediterrane Film Festival is to attract foreign film investment, and that it is crucial to differentiate between that goal and funding local productions.

Mount Etna, Europe’s tallest and most active volcano, erupted dramatically from one of its largest craters yesterday.
The Voragine crater, which had been dormant for four years, reawakened, producing a flow of lava. This event follows a series of recorded eruptive activities throughout June at Etna’s Bocca Nuova Crater, Southeast Crater, and Voragine Crater.
In June, gas emissions at the Bocca Nuova Crater were variable, with occasional high-temperature pulses visible as flashes of fire at night. Red ash emissions were also observed but dissipated quickly.
Weak activity at Voragine Crater began in mid-June, with initial explosions every 10 minutes, building small hornitos. Over several days, this formed a small scoria cone, reaching about 20 metres high by the end of June.

Biden has noted that the coming days are crucial for his re-election campaign, acknowledging the possibility that he may not be able to salvage his candidacy if he fails to reassure voters of his capabilities following a disastrous debate performance last week.
Biden hosted a closed-door lunch with Vice-President Kamala Harris at the White House as speculation grew over whether she might replace him as the party’s candidate in November’s election. Following the lunch, Biden and Harris joined a call with the broader Democratic campaign, where Biden firmly stated his intention to remain in the race.
“I’m the nominee of the Democratic Party. No one’s pushing me out. I’m not leaving,” he declared, according to a source.
This sentiment was echoed in a fundraising email sent out by the Biden-Harris campaign, in which Biden stated, “Let me say this as clearly and simply as I can: I’m running,” and affirmed his commitment to staying in the race until the end.
Despite efforts to project confidence, questions have been mounting about Biden’s fitness for office following his debate with Trump, which was marked by verbal blanks, a weak voice, and some difficult-to-follow answers. This performance has sparked concern within Democratic circles about his ability to win the election.
Pressure on Biden to drop out has intensified, as recent polls indicate his Republican rival’s lead has widened. A New York Times poll conducted after the debate suggested Trump now holds his biggest lead yet at six points.
As Biden continues to navigate this critical period, his ability to convince voters of his readiness and resolve will be essential in determining the future of his campaign.
Floriana remains without a mayor after councillors failed to reach a consensus today.
Although the PL won 43.64% of the Floriana vote compared to the PN’s 31.01%, both parties elected two councillors each. The fifth seat went to Nigel Holland, an independent councillor and former mayor who contested under the Floriana L-Ewwel banner.
In today’s meeting, the PL proposed their most popular councillor, Sandra Sammut Hili, as mayor. However, the PN’s councillors - James Aaron Ellul and Justine Palmer - as well as Nigel Holland voted against the nomination.
The PN didn’t nominate a mayor themselves, taking the stance that the PL, as the party with a relative majority, must reach a compromise itself.
On a stream by Kai Cenat, Mr. Beast and AMP Davis on Twitch, a large stack of firecrackers and fireworks can be seen in Cenat’s room.
Concerns among their fans sparked after Davis threatened to light the fireworks inside, which led to him and Cenat getting into a physical fight.
Davis then proceed to light the firecrackers and the room was engulfed in smoke as 300,000 viewers were watching the stream.
Fans of the three of them are taking to social media saying that this was a fake room which Mr. Beast built of Cenat’s room as a stunt to promote his new chocolate bar, or something to do with the 4th of July.
The streamers haven’t posted anything since the stream ended.
