Forming part of the AGM, a yearly tradition dating back to the cooperative’s founding, is the member’s vote on membership status and nominee portfolio submissions. The 2024 meeting welcomes two new members, Yael Martínez (@yaelmtzv ) and Sabiha Çimen (@sabakhayr ), and two nominees, @salihbashier and @sakirkhader . In the coming days, we will spotlight a selection of works by each new member and nominee member. A program of events, including exhibitions, signings, talks and portfolio reviews, continues throughout the week in Arles. PHOTO: © @pvanagtmael / Magnum Photos

Since 2022, @william.keo has documented life in the Parisian suburbs, known as the banlieues, seeking to represent the culture and communities of their residents in a different, more honest way. Forming part of this major project is his book Offside, depicting the joy, suspense and community of a local football tournament in his hometown of Aulnay-sous-bois, known as the Coupe d’Afrique des Nations des Banlieues. Choosing to eschew photographing the pitch, Keo instead turns his lens to the spectators, draped in national flags and soccer jerseys, visualizing the anticipation and euphoria that unfolds. For many in the Parisian banlieues, the future looks uncertain amidst rising social tensions ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympics due to be held in the city. Communities in the suburbs see higher concentrations of poverty and social exclusion, and the large immigrant populations face further risk in the aftermath of the recent unprecedented victory of France’s new far-right National Rally party in the 2024 European Parliament elections. 🔗 Discover the article at the link in the @magnumphotos bio. (1) Spectators during a match of the African Cup of Nations. The feature film The Bikeriders, directed by Jeff Nichols and inspired by the eponymous photobook by @dannylyonphotos2 , launches today in cinemas worldwide 🏍️ Originally published in 1968, Lyon’s seminal series is an authentic, personal and uncompromising four-year account of American biker culture. A student and avid motorcyclist, Lyon began photographing motorcycle races in the early 1960s, offering an unseen insight into a misunderstood American counterculture and subverting its commercialized image. In 1965, Lyon joined the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club, documenting them as a member for two years. Through a combination of photographs, personal texts and transcribed interviews, his immersion in this environment enabled him to craft intimate, first-hand narratives of the club and its members, yielding an enduring record of rebellion and personal freedom. 🔗 See more of The Bikeriders, as well as some stills from the film, in the Magnum Gallery online exhibition at the link in the @magnumphotos bio. PHOTOS (left to right): (1) From Lindsey’s room. Happy summer solstice 🌞 As the Earth’s tilt towards the sun reaches its greatest in the Northern Hemisphere, different countries and cultures in Europe, North America and beyond prepare for their Midsummer celebrations. Photos from @georgerodgerphotos , @ianberrymagnum and @steeleperkins , taken in 1960 and 1975, depict celebrations at the Stonehenge landmark in Wiltshire, England, a place of significance where citizens gather every year to celebrate the solstice. @constantine.manos : “By choosing a precise intersection between subject and time, the photographer may transform the ordinary into the extraordinary and the real into the surreal.” Manos' work, American Color, divided into the books American Color and American Color 2, serves as a vibrant and dynamic portrayal of contemporary American life. From Santa Monica and New Orleans to Provincetown and New York City, Manos captures a kaleidoscope of charmingly unconventional and unique scenes on streets, beaches, crowded boardwalks and at small-town carnivals, depicting a bold interplay of light, color, and shape. In the first book, originally published in 1995, Manos discusses "the flow of people in a setting, their changing relationship to each other and their environment," and how these elements combine to create a dynamic scene. In American Color 2, he further heightens the elusive nature and level of abstraction in his images, with the relationship between shadow, form, and color taking center stage. PHOTOS (left to right): (1) Daytona Beach, Florida.
