Agri-economists say they are confident that the newly appointed agriculture minister John Steenhuisen will be able to boost the industry’s prospects.
Steenhuisen’s appointment on Sunday comes against the backdrop of the latest Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa’s (Agbiz) confidence index dropping to 38 points in the second quarter of 2024 from 40 points in the previous quarter, the lowest since 2009.

Plastic lids and bottles tell a compelling story about the sources of beach litter on South Africa’s coastlines.
A recent study by researchers at the FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology at the University of Cape Town and Nelson Mandela University reveals surprising differences in how these items travel and accumulate on beaches.
By sampling loose lids and bottles at 21 different beaches, the study uncovered distinct patterns in their origins and dispersal.
According to the the study, water and soft drink bottles made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) sink at sea unless they contain trapped air, whereas their lids are made from polymers that float and can drift long distances.

Ramaphosa announced the cabinet late on Sunday night.
Former opposition leader John Steenhuisen was named agriculture minister, one of six portfolios that went to the Democratic Alliance. The party’s chief whip Siviwe Gwarube, 34, will become education minister while its provincial chairman in KwaZulu-Natal, Dean Macpherson, was named as minister of public works.

M&G FRIDAY | Young French ballet superstar, #GuillaumeDiop is dancing in Joburg Ballet’s production of The Sleeping Beauty this weekend – Friday 28 June and Sunday 30 June at the Joburg Theatre.
He will be in the role of Prince Désiré who is saving Princess Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) from the sortilege that the wicked fairy Carabosse did to her. The 24-year-old Diop is one of the youngest and the first ever black person to be promoted to the exalted status of an étoile dancer at Paris Opera Ballet. In ballet, this is a massive deal.
An étoile (star) is the highest of the respected Paris Opera’s five ranks. Last year, at the age of just 23, the prodigious Diop bypassed the rank of “premier danseur” in the
highly hierarchical 355-year-old company – a most unusual move.
The Sleeping Beauty will be a major production with around 50 dancers, staged by ballet mistress and producer Sophie Sarrote, who was a dancer for many years with the famed La Scala Ballet in Milan. Set to music by Tchaikovsky, the demanding ballet will be accompanied by a 57-piece Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra.
