Posted @withregram@theartnewspaper.official 14 Years of Tory Rule… by Mark Wallinger @mark_wallinger_mark We asked the Turner Prize-winning artist to create a work reflecting on the impact of 14 years of Tory rule on the arts, which we present here. To accompany the piece, he submitted a statement. It says: “The charge sheet for the Tories is lengthy: five hapless and useless leaders, austerity as ideology, NHS in crisis, food banks, hostile environment policy, Brexit, xenophobia, corruption, mendacity and incompetence during the pandemic, cronyism, partygate, water companies dumping sewage, rowing back on climate change commitments, the housing crisis, Grenfell victims still waiting for justice, cost of living crisis, maligning asylum seekers, Rwanda scheme, contempt for human rights, the post office scandal and Liz Truss, for heaven’s sake. As far as the arts community is concerned: the loss of the arts as a central part of the school curriculum, and the resultant inequality of opportunity for state educated students. The woeful underfunding of the arts (with art schools and museums struggling), the knock-on effects of Brexit, the continual sniping and threats to the BBC, the politicisation of public funding in the attempts to break down the arm’s length principle, the merry-go round of different culture secretaries.” – Mark Wallinger Tap the link in our bio for our analysis of the UK arts industry after a decade and a half of the Conservative Party in power.

ON VIEW | CREATURES & MASKS 29 February 2024 - 13 April 2024 | @fabian_lang Curated by: Fabian Lang It is perhaps unsurprising that the absurd, the strange and twisted, and the use of masks or the creation of creatures are to be found in such a peculiarly distinctive form in the work of many artists working today. How much of the tradition and intention of the Commedia dell’Arte can be found in this approach, in this expression? Originating in northern Italy during the Renaissance, its influence is still to be traced through to today; an influence that let to the development of comical figures and tropes throughout Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries. And why so much of it today? It is indeed rather curious that fantasy figures are so widely employed by contemporary painters and sculptors in order to say something about our times. The grimaces, the disguises, the distorted bodies serve as a realisation of the mechanics of the depths of the unconscious, of the manifold self, or as a vehicle of criticism of the powerful. Like the jester Arlecchino, it is a voice or language that allows one to criticise and ridicule, more deeply and far-sightedly than perhaps without a mask. The artist’s ingeniously invented worlds reliably lead us on a curious trail that somehow from somewhere seems familiar at the same time. It is the language of poetics. One of the artists who incorporates wordplay, humour, symbolism, philosophy and poetry into his work is Mark Wallinger. Here with probably the most direct reference to the Commedia dell’Arte. It is not even a work that was originally intended as a work; it is more a product of a kind of performance. The occasion was a masked ball organised in his honour for his exhibition in Venice, which I curated at Victoria Miro. Cheeky, clever and skilful as Mark is, he soon came up with an idea that was as witty as it was ingenious: instead of redesigning the traditional masks for the guests, he simply put glasses on the masks, a copy of his own characteristic glasses. And suddenly all the guests were Wallingers, and the time-honoured masks were disguised themselves. The readymade The Optometer was born.

On view! Castor and Pollux, 2023 Single-channel video, colour, sound 7 min 38 seconds Curated by Minna Moore Ede and presented by Vortic and Victoria Miro, an exhibition of primarily new work by sixteen artists across a variety of media – drawing, painting, sculpture, film and dance. Their responses to the myth of "Leda and the Swan" are diverse; each has found their own meaning in the story, revealing much about our contemporary preoccupations, be they personal or universal. Mark Wallinger recasts "Castor and Pollux" as astronauts. Juxtaposing footage of the Russian Alexei Leonov and the American Ed White taking the first steps in space in 1965 (77 days apart), his film is accompanied by music from Rameau’s opera Castor and Pollux (1737). #vorticart #victoriamiro #ledaandtheswan

Only until tomorrow! Wallinger is showing what he has made during those last couple of extraordinary years. Confined to isolation and guiltless pleasures Wallinger draws on an existential reflection of it all. “The purpose or meaning of work moved from habit to something more existential for everyone … just as the limited freedom that was allowed in the first lockdown for solitary exercise and recreation brought something new to the streets of London, as we learned to move from moment to moment.” (Mark Wallinger) @mark_wallinger_mark #markwallinger #galeriefabianlang #fabianlang

Mark Wallinger's most recent creations, 'Panorama' photographs and 'Isolated Figures' sculptures, are on display at the gallery’s new exhibition ‘Arcadia’. The works were created by Wallinger in his studio at the Bomb Factory during the initial wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. They describe the otherworldly new London during the first lockdown, 2020. @mark_wallinger_mark #markwallinger #galeriefabianlang #fabianlang
