Online now: MattFlix 50 - Katharine Meynell Katharine Meynell Soil 21 June - 23 August 2024 Follow the link in our bio to watch now. MattFlix is pleased to present 'Soil' (2024) by Katharine Meynell. 'Soil' is a single channel video, in part of images, events and performances created during a residency at Live Art Ireland in Tipperary. "In and of the soil, as a delicate yet mighty balancing act. "It started as a diary and a love poem written during a ‘soil residency’ in Tipperary, it became a performance sitting in a bucket of earth and lying in a duvet of turf. Infused with the dearness of justice, my thoughts shifted between resignation and hope. I raked over these and a collage of images were subsequently added. It was made without budget, often as selfies (cameras taped to window frames, etc) fittingly made within an economy of means. This is an account of a symbiotic bond to the earth, it takes a dip into the political, economic and biological. It reflects on the proximity to soil that is emotional, physical and inevitable." - KM, June 2024 @meynellkatharine

Harminder Judge, A Ghost Dance 24 May – 7 July 2024 Matt’s Gallery & The Sunday Painter Private View & Performance: Thursday 23 May, 6-9pm at both spaces Exhibition Continues: 24 May – 7 July 2024 Wednesday-Sunday, 12-6pm at both spaces Free entry Harminder Judge’s ‘A Ghost Dance’ is a single exhibition of new work across both Matt’s Gallery and The Sunday Painter in South London.  Located just 10 minutes’ walk from each other, the two spaces are pleased to present an exhibition in two parts. The galleries have worked collaboratively to help Judge realise a new body of work that brings the artist’s wall-based plaster pieces into dialogue with new developments with free standing and floor-based sculptures.  ‘A Ghost Dance’ is a show that references funeral rites, processions and the presence of ghosts and spirits. It draws on persistent themes in Judge’s work: life, death, ritual and rebirth, creating parallels between the deconstructed body and the cosmos.  For Matt’s Gallery, Judge will work at scale, developing a monumental, enveloping expanse of material, pigment and colour for the space and setting this in dialogue with new discreet, floor-based semi-figurative works redolent of funereal urns or totems. For The Sunday Painter, Judge will combine new works on a smaller scale with a new cadaver-like sculpture devised for their space. A processional performance between the two spaces will take place on the opening night, recalling early performance works by the artist. The exhibition will be accompanied by a new essay by Susanna Davies-Crook, building on her previous text ‘Spectres and Portals: The Work of Harminder Judge’, produced for the artist’s debut solo show in India at Jhaveri Contemporary, Mumbai in 2023. ‘A Ghost Dance’ at Matt’s Gallery is supported by the Henry Moore Foundation @henrymoorefdn_grants @harminderjudge  @thesundaypainter  #ghostdance  #mattsgallery  #nineelms  #paintings  #contemporaryart
