A couple weeks ago, I had the opportunity to be a juror of the Postacchini International Violin Competition @concorsopostacchini which has been held in Fermo, Italy for 30 years. It’s a very lovely organization and I enjoyed it greatly. It was a pleasure to get to know new colleagues on the jury - delightful people and artists. The playing by the young violinists - from Europe, Asia and the US - was excellent, accomplished, expressive, and at times quite moving. We listened for 8 days to four age categories. First rounds were Paganini caprices, solo Bach, Mozart concertos. It took me back to my musical roots, a place I’m very comfortable in but where I don’t spend such a fully immersive time nowadays. Fermo is an idyllically beautiful town from pre-Roman times, on a hill between the Adriatic Sea and Apennine mountains. It sits on top of 30 rooms of Roman underground cisterns that are among the oldest and largest in the world. Listening in current times to all that old, wonderful music in that ancient town, I felt carried centuries into the past and touched by the sincere young people’s music-making amid the vibrancy of the cherished local culture. For me it was a meaningful perspective.

The night of Feb 1, after an evening hang with composers at the Florida State University Festival of New Music in Tallahassee, I was walking back to the hotel and talking with friend and festival guest composer Du Yun. Carrying a lot of stuff and my violin on my back, I tripped on something on the sidewalk and fell. Injured my chin badly and had to get stitches. My recital actually went very well, I so enjoyed it and was very focused and in the moment. It was good that my concert wasn’t any later, because I felt much worse in the days after that. I also had other abrasions and injuries and my body felt in a kind of shock. Now I’m mostly recovered. Anyway I thought I’d put a few things here from the last month because it was a lot of good times otherwise! 1 yesterday 2-5 FSU/Florida 6-7 Scott Wollschleger recording at Oktaven and MSM seminar with Karl Larson 8-9 before concert with Tongyu Lu at Merkin Hall 10 David Sanford at rehearsal of his piece Reprise Concerts to come!!

A highlight of life so far for me, for sure, playing Georg Friedrich Haas’ gorgeous concerto, written for me and dedicated to my grandfather, at the @musikverein.wien ! Thank you again to everyone! Georg is a truly amazing composer of vivid emotional expression, a master craftsman with the elements of music, all in a balance of sophistication and simplicity. Congrats to him on a remarkable series of concerts there featuring his compositions! I’m profoundly grateful to have been given a work to play that is so musically rich and deeply rewarding, related to the Berg Violin Concerto and expanded into microtonality and a form for the modern story in sound that Georg wanted to tell. He agreed it was indeed my best performance of it yet :) Thank you and congrats to the wonderful musicians of @rso.wien and terrific conductor @markus.poschner ! It was a great collaboration. The recording is up on @oe1 for another day or two. Thanks also to Die Presse for the review. It said “Miranda Cuckson is a poetic soloist with a strong personality, yet unpretentious." The hall was full and responded with warmth and close attentiveness. My goal as a performer is always to uplift listeners emotionally and spiritually, in some way. [Uplifting doesn’t necessarily mean lofty or religious. It can mean just improving people’s mood, or actually dealing with difficult emotions or situations, or providing a paradigm-shifting experience.] I also greatly enjoyed the masterclass with RSO academy violinists, who played Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Bach. And hearing Georg’s piece “Joshua Tree” with the Vienna Symphony that evening. Cheers to Vienna for the superb music and friendliness, the picturesque holiday festivity in the snow, and the plum cake, chocolate and schnitzels. Again despite current global tensions and tendencies, I felt the city turned outward and both historic and modern again in its melting pot way. 💗
