The museum’s iconic MOCA logo has been reimagined for a vital cause – to get out the VOTE.

Made in collaboration with the logo’s original creator Tom Geismar, @MOCAStores ’ new VOTE logo collection merges design and democracy on lapel buttons, hats, and t-shirts. Available now online at mocastore.org and at our flagship MOCA Store at MOCA Grand Avenue.

Let your voice be heard. Together, we can make democracy a living work of art. See link in bio for more info.

Josh Kline: Climate Change opens to the public today. Both an exhibition and a total work of art, Climate Change is an ambitious, immersive suite of science-fiction installations that imagines a future sculpted by ruinous climate crisis and the ordinary people destined to inhabit it. Begun in 2018 and produced in sections over the last five years, Kline’s eponymous project mobilizes sculpture, moving image work, photography, and ephemeral materials to completely transform the galleries of MOCA Grand Avenue. **Opening Event** Josh Kline in conversation with Johanna Burton Today, June 23, 2024 3:30pm - 5pm MOCA Grand Avenue #Free with RSVP (see link in bio) On the occasion of the opening of Josh Kline: Climate Change, join MOCA for an afternoon with exhibiting artist Josh Kline and the Maurice Marciano Director of The Museum of Contemporary Art, Johanna Burton. — #joshkline #climatechange #mocagrandavenue

Join us for MOCA Artist Film series screening of Simon Leung’s War After War, 2011, 90 min. Thursday, June 27, 2024, 6pm @moca Grand Ave. 🎟️ FREE with RSVP. In War After War, 2011, artist Simon Leung (Hong Kong, 1964) offers a portrait of the mythical writer, translator, and art world figure Warren Niesłuchowski. The ninety-minute work unravels Niesłuchowski’s life in the first decade of the 21st century as a nomad without a home who depended on others to provide him with a bed for the night, week, month, or longer, while he traveled through North America and Europe as a perpetual guest. The work explores notions of hospitality, mortality, vulnerability, resistance, and living itself as an ethico-aesthetic proposition in the residual space of war. Leung’s video is also a rumination on friendship and the art world. Leung will be present for a post-screening conversation with writer and curator Michael Ned Holte, Associate Dean, School of Art at CalArts. MOCA Artist Film Series is presented by The Edward F. Limato Foundation. 📷 Stills from War After War, 2011. Image courtesy of the artist. #simonleung #moca

Bass-baritone Davóne Tines (@alsoanoperasinger ) brings lead character Jim to life in The Comet / Poppea, an opera staged on a revolving turntable divided into two sides. One side revisits W.E.B Du Bois’ proto-Afro-futurist short story The Comet about Jim, a Black man, and Julia, a White woman in the 1920s who are the only survivors in New York after the city is hit by a comet. Listen as Tines discusses his role as Jim in The Comet. Conceived by director Yuval Sharon (@yuvalsharon_la_detroit ), with music by George Lewis and libretto by Douglas Kearney (@douglas.kearney ), MOCA and The Industry (@industryopera ), the final performances of The Comet / Poppea take place this weekend at WAREHOUSE at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. Limited tickets are still available. Checkout the link in bio for more information and to reserve tickets. 🎟️
—- The Comet / Poppea is realized through a landmark partnership among organizations across the United States, produced by Anthony Roth Costanzo and Cath Brittan, The Industry, AMOC* (American Modern Opera Company), Curtis Institute of Music, and Yale Schwarzman Center. Josh Kline’s short film Adaptation (2019–22) imagines a future Manhattan transformed by climate change and follows a team of relief workers at the end of their shift. Described by the artist as a “science fiction of ordinary life,” the film focuses on what tomorrow could be like for the working people who will clean up the inevitable mess resulting from the political and economic decisions of previous generations. Using primarily analogue special effects—scale models, miniatures, and matte shots—and 16mm color film instead of high-definition digital video, Kline creates an expressionistic science fiction that suggests a nostalgia for the present from the perspective of a future transformed by global warming. Although it was filmed in 2019, the work was completed during the pandemic, and its poetic voiceover and melancholy soundtrack, both added in 2020, quietly evoke the lockdown and quarantine in New York. Josh Kline: Climate Change opens to the public this Sunday. **Opening Event** Josh Kline in conversation with Johanna Burton Sunday, June 23, 2024 3:30pm - 5pm MOCA Grand Avenue #Free with RSVP (see link in bio) On the occasion of the opening of Josh Kline: Climate Change, join MOCA for an afternoon with exhibiting artist Josh Kline and the Maurice Marciano Director of The Museum of Contemporary Art, Johanna Burton. --- #joshkline #climatechange #mocagrandavenue Images: Josh Kline, Adaptation (stills) (2019-22). 16mm film (color, sound), 10:45 min.
