A big rule in journalism is “show, don’t tell.” And since words fail when I try to describe what it felt like (after months of planning) for The Modern Loss Variety Hour to become a thing outside of my own weird brain and those of my amazing collaborators, hopefully these videos will do a much better job. An enormous thank you to everyone who *completely filled* the @mm_jccmanhattan theater on Wednesday night, gamely hurled plates against the wall, participated in quiz shows and eagerly met each other at the four-way intersection of yearning, memory, hilarity, and hopefulness. But thank you the most to an A+ lineup of people willing to keep it real, and by doing so, moved every person in that room while also making them laugh hard as hell: @briandarcyjames , @katecjames , @johnfcardoza , @stefanalxndr , @swaltien , @lizglazer , @myqkaplan and @benwassergram . Hope you’re all enjoying your World’s Shittiest Prize. More clips to come!

🎂🎂It’s my book birthday! 🎂🎂 I know things are scary and I’m feeling it all. But today I’m choosing to also unabashedly feel pride and joy on the publication of “The Modern Loss Handbook: An Interactive Guide to Moving Through Grief and Building Your Resilience,” which is ON SALE TODAY wherever books are sold!!! Please consider getting a copy for yourself or someone who could use it; just head to the link in our profile. To mark this occasion, I hope you enjoy a spontaneous thing that my new favorite person @gayleking and I filmed after last Friday’s interview. She truly is an incredible human. Please enjoy watching me being speechless and stunned and physically incapable of preventing myself from hugging her! I hope it means something to all of you that someone like Gayle sees and acknowledges all of you. A very special thank you to everyone who supported this project with their advance praise, all tagged here, as well as to my super agent @rgradinger and the phenomenal @runningpressbooks team. And a particular thank you to my cofounder @gsbwriter for being such an enormous part of ML’s origin story and existence. This has been quite the journey. Let’s see what happens next.

🎟️ TICKET GIVEAWAY: READ ON! 🎟️ Most things wouldn’t drive me to post at 6 pm on July 3, but being invited to do a lively post-show talkback with the singular Rachel Bloom (co-creator and star of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) after her Williamstown Theatre Festival performance of “Death, Let Me Do My Show” is a clear exception! Rachel’s one-woman creation exploring her profound personal grief stemming from the Covid-19 pandemic is so special, so raw, so raunchy and escapist that I believe it should be required viewing for all humans of appropriate age (I’ve seen it twice now—that’s us in Austin). Anyone in or near the Berkshires can catch me in conversation with @racheldoesstuff on the @wtfestival stage after the Sunday, July 7 matinee (shows run from the 5th-14th). I’m a huge fan of hers personally and professionally and can’t wait for the world to see her take on these hard things. Ticket link is in our profile but we’re giving away TWO FREE TICKETS to this sold-out performance! All you have to do is spend two seconds doing the following: ☠️ Like this post ☠️ Share to your stories ☠️ Bonus point for dropping a comment or tagging someone!

Hallmark holidays are complicated during the best of times. But when you’re moving through a big loss – due to death, estrangement, infertility, or beyond – the weeks leading up to the actual date can become supercharged with angst. It’s understandable to want to pack your schedule with advance plans in order to prevent a certain day from flattening you, but @ModernLoss@RebeccaSoffer has an important reminder. What’s helped you get through Hallmark holidays? Let us know in the comments below. 〰️ #FathersDay2024 #FathersDayGrief #LossOfAParent

“Grief is sloppy and raw. Like an oyster, it takes on many unpredictable shapes. It sometimes chokes you if you don’t chew it well enough or if you try to swallow it whole. It’s fleshy and layered with acidity and bitterness and yearning and its peculiarities are profound, striking with an intensity only those who have experienced can understand.” We loved this poignant – and, frankly, delicious – reflection by @griefhungry on one of the last (and most surprising) meals she had with her dad before his sudden death. Grilled oyster with compound butter recipe included. 🦪 Click on our profile link to read the full piece.
